Ethanol discussion

Ethanol free gas is getting REAL hard to find here in the Baltimore/Washington DC area. Main problem is the hot starting (or not starting) issue. Fuel stabilizers are one thing, but does anyone know of a good Ethanol additive? I have picked up some LUCAS Ethanol Fuel "Conditioner" and am going to see how much/ if it helps. The '67 New Yorker doesn't have this problem so much, but it is chronic with the Diplomat. We elevated the carb. with a spacer to dissipate heat, which helped a bit.....any others have advice here? MANY THANKS.

Jav, what more is there to say over and above wht we know about it being pure **** and was the result of the biggest scam ever on the entire America public.

Ethanol gas can ruin a brand new carb in under 8 months. AMHIK.
The commercial products that treat the gas are a bare minimum preventative measure.
Not sure if they even work.
I have been using a small amount of TW4 2 stroke oil and commercial treatment when I am forced to use ethanol.

I remember when it was announced by George W Bush, it came in respect nice to rising oil prices and a way to help support corn farming industry. It had the desired effect at the time.

What we’re e talking about is the unintended effects and a way to make its use more palatable for us old car guys.

I’m mixing ethanol and non ethanol to help keep %age as low as I can. So far a 50/50 mix with resulting reduction in total percentage to 5% does not seem to be a problem.

Another area where government meddling has caused problems that need more government meddling. The emissions emitted to make ethanol are greater than the emissions emitted burning non-ethanol gas is one argument. The agricultural industry has been totally upended with government subsidies to prop up production and/or prices. Of course for every report or article on the negatives of ethanol there are reports and articles stating the opposite. In the meantime I keep stocked up on non ethanol for my Fury and all my lawn equipment .

putting this link up hoping to get to bout and more info. Everything I’ve heard is bad and can attest to carb issues in my other cars regarding the ethanol in “gasoline” fuel these days. Mainly: sputter, flooding, irregular missfires etc.

Javier: For several years now, I've been adding one ounce of two-cycle marine oil with TC-W3 to every five gallons of gas in all of my cars - even my old Harley panhead. You can buy it by the gallon from WallyWorld for about $13.00 / gallon.

The two-cycle oil has been very helpful with respect to counter-acting the corrosive effects of ethanol. It lubricates and protects all parts of the fuel system (tank, lines, fuel pump and carburetor - even fuel injectors); it cleans the valves, plugs and lubricates the piston ring pack promoting better sealing / combustion. My gas mileage improved slightly, and I swear the engines seem to run better.

The problem is, corn farms are failing because the price is so low. The government then gives them money, then the production of corn makes the price go even lower. All of the sudden there is a surplus of corn that the government now owns in return for their money. They have to find something to do with all of that corn. This is what they do with it.

As far as finding non-ethanol fuel look around lakes and harbors. Anywhere there is boating.

I follow Rip's train of though when I no have to use it doctoring it with the 2 stoke oil. There is a treatment made by Star Brite called Startron. Before discovering a local source for ethanol free gas I'd used this. I have no hard evidence that it works, but I've not suffered any problems when using it in my motorcycle, NYer, or outdoor equipment. Supposedly it has enzymes in it that eat the ethanol.

I have been doing the same for 5 years probably around 10,000 miles. A nice cheap additive. I have 4 or 5, 2 oz squeeze bottles which makes it easy every time I fill up.

The 2 stroke marine oil is good without spending big $$$ on the special witch doctor's brew they are selling. Ethonol is alcohol with a high acidic level, but at only 10% it will take forever for it to eat away at anything. The worst it does is attract moisture (water) now it makes acidic water globs in your tank lines ect. Being that our fuel systems are open to the atmosphere and drying out from non use you end up with a acidic jelly type stuff in float bowls and tank.
The 2 stoke oil protects surfaces from this acid and moisture that's all. The other way to prevent this build up is keep driving the car, no time to evaporate no jelly forming the ethonol and all the other crap they put in gasoline burns off in combustion chamber and out exhaust pipe into the face of the average Prius owner, win-win.
Now go drive the damn things!

I have been using the Wal-Mart 2cycle marine oil in my 1990 Honda Accord for about 3mos and I have noticed a definite increase in fuel mileage, about 10%. on Long island there are no ethanol. free gas stations. The price of reg unleaded is about $2.83 a gallon locally.
The other night I topped off with 7gal of E85 on top of the approx 10 gal of reg unleaded. its been about 100 miles since doing so and the car is running fine. I am toying with the idea of gradually running all E85 in this car. I think if I continue with my 2cycle oil as my fuel treatment I should be ok as far as any rubber parts deteriorating.
I believe I may have to switch to a colder plug and give it some more timing once I get to running 100% ethanol.
Locally the E85 sells for $1.85 gal, which makes it quite attractive.
If the Honda does well, Im going to give it a try in My 75 NYB. I havebeen in contact with a company called E85 carbs. they have Edelbrock and Holley carbs that you can purchase or they will convert one that you supply them. Btw the last 3 tankfuls of fuel in my NYB have been treated with the 2cycle marine oil to try an keep the fuel from corroding the metal and absorbing the moisture from the atmosphere., she seems to like!
Does anyone have any similiar experience with this E85 conversion?
