What to replace suspension (66 Fury).

Hey, BigblueC (& others),
And those 3 items you mentioned -- the PITMAN ARM -- the BIG $$$ item of the whole front end, the Idler Arm, and the Sleeves (I have N.O.S. MOOG where MOOG
I S Obsolete -- and price them these days!!!)
Total $ 300 by themselves.

So that pushes your front end over a $ 1000 -- and I am doing it for the pre-season special of $ 800....
So I dare say, I believe I am Ultra - Fair --- and that is what I seek to do (but, I have to find it accordingly -- and of course, then , have EVERYTHING!!!!)
Shocks I never bothered with, because they are hawked so cheap on the internet, Monroe, KYB, and Bilsteins.....yes, just get them yourselves....
The shocks I have are the REAL difficult ones --
1965 - 1969 AMC / Rambler, 1957 - 1958 Mercury,
1967 - 1968 Eldorado / Toronado , etc., etc.-- the ones you can't routinely find......

Any questions or comments,
Always best to simply call me.......... Thanxxxxxx

I agree. Your prices seem very fair. I wish I would have thought of you before I started collecting parts for my rebuild.

I see I am late to this thread & I don't know what stage you are at right now with this but if you haven't got the $$$'s, then slowly collect the parts needed and go on from there.

If you can't front that kind of cash then find other ways to do it even if it is gently used items. Yes, I said it here... used! As long as they are in GWC then why not? just be ready to replace the parts down the road sooner than later.
In all reality, how much do you plan to drive the car? a few thousand miles each year?
If that's the case then consider this option.
I know that this could cause a ripple in the forum here but it's your money & car.

As long as you can build it so it is safe for you to drive then you do what you got to do so you can enjoy the car.

I'm already dead Craig - she was looking over my shoulder when I viewed this thread.:canada:

Last time my wife happened to be looking over my shoulder & I was on the FCBO was the exact time I had by chance opened the Smokin' Hot Sundays" thread for the first time.

I was grounded from the FCBO for a month...

Some of you Canadian guys allow your women to dominate your existence.....
You need to watch more " 2 and 1/2 Men" and watch and learn what Charlie Sheen / Charlie Harper does....
After all, who do you want to be --- Charlie Harper --- or Alan Harper ???? Eh???? (That eh?? was for you)
(( Heh, heh, now I am R E A L L Y gonna get them killed!!!! EH?? ))

Hadn't though of this, but it sounds like a great option for me. Where could I source used parts though?

I don't recommend used bushings. Used glass, body panels, chrome trim, even wiring, yes. But other than obvious cracks and such, how can you tell a used bushing is any better than the one you're replacing? If it's as hard as a rock, or has a set to it from its' previous install, it won't do the job properly. I do like Tom's suggestion though of buying what you can afford bit by bit.

Used wearable suspension pieces, I'd stay away from. Used control arms I have picked up for Just in Case status.

Used front end parts is like used underwear....
Do you really want to step into someone else's used underwear???
And, we're not talking about trying on your wife's panties, now -- we're talking trying on some other dude's tidy whities.... Don't do that....
They may not be so tidy and they may not be so whities.

I agree with the bushings not being used but rather tie rods, ball joints, idler arms....
The steel mechanical parts can be found.
I have a small stash of these parts under the bench from simply collecting them since buying my c body...

I agree that bushing are not to be used unless they were installed then upgraded and perhaps pressed into control arms and picked up as an assembly.
It's difficult to press them in and out without damage.

Did you realize the number one item sold on Ebay used to be used underwear until Ebay banned these listing?

OK, I apologize if I was quick and overly harsh Tom - I should have read between the lines better. :) Carefully selecting decent used steering components I'll agree can tie one over when required, but even then, things like ball joints and other ball/pivot things are hard to assess condition-wise, especially off the car, and for someone like me who might not know exactly what to look for it might be wasted money. And again, one really doesn't know how long they'll last if they spec good, as they're already potentially worn.

As you say though, it can buy one time.

I never considered the comments harsh other than the used underwear comment from our resident high pressure salesperson here:lol:

Yes I agree it is difficult to test if out of the car.
One would have to carefully consider that aspect.

If they are next to no charge then all that is lost is time invested in installing ans testing if they are good.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained right?

Cool. By the way, the hideaway headlight grill saga continues. I'll update you soon.

It's been on my mind too but I have to finsih up my current project of window regulator rebuilding for the time being.
I'm also under strict instructions to improvethe radio in the convertible too

Quite a long time ago I had someone criticize me for trying to economize on certain aspects of a model RC aircraft hobby.
I was scratching to come up with enough coin to be involved at the time.
Their comment caused me to leave the club I was a member of since as always I look to have good value for my $$$ struck me that his was not for the weak of pocket book & if we couldn't fork over $50 for a one time levy for improvements we should not be in the club.
'If you can't afford $50 then you shouldn't be in the hobby" was his comment.
I took it as a Que to leave since i was one of the few brave enough to stand against the suggested levy so I resigned my position on the executive wishing them all the best in the future.

That person who made that comment was claiming to be living under the poverty line at the time yet selling his carved water fowls (ducks) under the table for $20,000+ a pop at the time hence in all reality ripping off the cdn government & ripple affect was me paying for his welfare cheques.

I'm not painting everyone with the same brush here but when I see comments about used underwear and living in Alabama it concerns me since we are supposed to be helping each other out.

I'm confident that I have earned the respect of our fellow members here & I can post without getting thrown under the bus.
