I want to put some higher gears in my 8.25 . It's a 71 Fury warmed over 360. It currently has 2.??? Something gears . Desert gears . I would like to do the overdrive thing but that's another topic. Is there any carrier change with the gear change or will the carrier I have accept the sure grip and and gear ratio ? I believe the 8.75 has diffrent carriers for different gear sets. Thank you in advanced.

By the time you swap gears, install a sure grip and rebuild the axle assembly you will be in to it for a fair chunk of change and have a weaker axle assembly, I would look for a complete 8 3/4 axle assembly to swap it in and be money ahead by the time your done in my opinion.

Anthony, I have a complete 8 3/4 rear end out of a '68 Fury. Come up to Connecticut with a truck and a $100 and take it away. It has a 2.76 gear but I also have an open "carrier" with a 3.23 gear that I am looking to sell.

I'm leaning toward the 8.75 but I have a lead on a 8.25 sure grip with gear set for under 400 $.. I also have someone here on the island he has a 8.75 rear housing out of a 70 300 ( I think ) for 200$ and a 3rd member with 3.92 he thinks he might part with for 600$... I just know if I go that way it's new shackles , leaf springs , shocks and anything else that can and will break. I dont have 2k right now . I was hoping to get by with the 8.25 for a bit

$200 would get you the complete rear end + the 3.23 open carrier. Once you have the funds you can add a sure-grip or change gears. I think that you would find that the majority of folks on FCBO think 3.23 is the best compromise gear for a better launch from a dead stop that still allows you to cruise on the highway at 70 MPH.

3.92 (more likely it's 3.91) is a bit steep for a street car. You won't be happy.
3.23 or even a 3.55 is a much better street gear.

I believe that the '71 Fury uses the offset shackle (part #3402136) that you can't buy new anywhere. The listings for new ones are wrong, they have no offset. Don't break it or cut the old one off...

Eventually, you will do something with your warmed over 360 that you believe will be impressive.

And the "built" 8.25 you have will embarrass you. Normally it starts breaking teeth off the spider gears. Sometimes the pinion bearing lets go and locks the rear.

I'd be looking for something much, much beefier...or you can learn the hard way. Some people have to.

The 8.25 will survive pretty well with a stock 360. If you are planning a build of the engine or a stroker kit later, then bite the bullet now and go with an 8.75. The 8.25 is too weak to handle big block type horsepower and torque numbers. As noted above the 8.25 unit will just break even if you spend a bunch of money for a sure grip and change gear ratios. Do the job right once.

Check your perch width and axle width of the 68 8 3/4 compared to the 71 set-up.....pretty sure the slab side set-up is slightly narrower then the fusies.

Anyone know if the driveshaft would need to be modified? If yes, anyone know what the correct length needed with the 8 3/4 would be?

Not sure but it should be close. The only thing I can see is you might have a larger cup size on the yolk on the 8 3/4 compared to the U-joint used on the 8 1/4. They do make an adapter U-joint with the two different sizes.

8 .25 rear is really the rear that can I have one in a 440 Dart with around 450 HP no issues. You have to watch the carried break though. If it has a offset pinon it has 2.45 gears or higher and will not accept lower gears like 3.55. There is a great thread on FABO about it we started. The 8 1/4 thread Has way to much info in it. You can also steal a jeep carrier usually 3.55 for it at the pick and pull for around 100. Have to use the whole carrier though the gears will not fit on a 8.25 carrier different bolt pattern.
