I am looking to replace the ancient L78-15 bias ply tires on my recently aquired 1970 Newport coupe with stock steel rims. From what I have researched a modern alternative could be 235/75/r15? Is this the closest match?

I agree with your comments Will, but the one advantage the Hankooks have is their 108 load rating compared to the 105 rating of the Cooper Trendsetters, that translates to a more stout tire for the Hankooks which tends to aid cornering characteristics for our large yachts. I find myself focusing on the great looking road wheels rather than the sidewall pattern.
But neither of these tires even closely compares to the whitewall 235/70/15 Michelin radials I used to be able to buy for these cars maybe 15 years ago now. Those were clearly the best tires I ever had on one of my C bodies in every respect and the tire contact patch seemed to be twice as wide as what is available now.
