how to remove rear fender ?

hi,

I was wondering how to remove the rear fenders on a 70 300 body. Do you know how to do it there some trics to know ?
There are some welding points that I can see so ok I can drill them, but how to deal with the rear pillar ?

Not one single fastener and somewhere in the neighborhood of 2 or 300 factory spot welds.
 
It has to be cut out with a plasma cutter ideally since they are part of the body. Only the front fenders are removable .
 
I prefer a good spot weld cutter for complete panel replacement or patches at the outer edges of the panels involving factory seems.

About mid-way up the C-piller there is a welded seam. Sand away the paint down to the metal and you will understand it.

I don't want to diminish your desires to do the work but this is major fabrication and body work.
It's one of those, "If you have to ask...".

There is only one way to remove a C body quarter panel...

Here's a pic of what a total quarter panel replacement looks like (Not a Chrysler panel, because...of course...nobody makes those!).

As mentioned there will be a lead seam on the C pillar that needs to be cleaned out to access the spot welds. These are spot welded all the way around the perimeter.

Process: Find all spot welds- drill out. You'll likely need to air chisel around the perimeter to loosen the panel. Then clean and replace using the reverse of the process...being sure the panel is well aligned.

The question that needs to be asked is are you removing it so you can replace it or are you removing it to reuse? If you are just replacing it you can rip and tear it off. If you want to reuse it it takes a lot of careful work to not destroy it.
 
Mine was original and was a white filler type material I could pry/chip out with a screwdriver blade.
I believe non vinyl top cars were leaded and finished better while vinyl top cars had a soft plastic type filler. I've also seen them with a little lead in the corners with no filler along the rest of the seam. Typical Mopar, never say never.

I was wondering to start the restoration process of the body of the 70's 300 I buy some years ago on the forum.

I asked a guy to media blast it ( it is a former body worker ) and he told me that the best would be to remove the rear fender to have acess to all the body, and to repair the fender easily.

I have no idea so I prefered ask about it. Now I can see that it is a lot of work.
what do you think ?
 
I’d cut out the pieces you intend to patch prior to media blasting but the quarter has to stay on in this case.
 
You would want to do as Detmatt said. Find the lower quarter sections from a donor car and splice them in, the upper part of your rear quarter is not that bad. You can wire weld using low amps and small wire in short passes so as not to warp the panel. Rust free metal for these cars is hard to find, so you may have to do some fabrication and make your splice parts.

Find a new guy to blast the car. I understand what hes thinking...I THINK...but this isnt a Cuda or Charger and you cant just call up AMD and order replacement panels.

Ideally yes, it'd be nice to blast all the hard to get areas and coat them properly, but at this point in time, the after market isn't there to support tearing the C bodies down to the inner skeleton.

Dont remove that quarter.
