Hey guys, We got the '65 NY'r running and even around the block a couple of times but now she won't start. cranks, has spark, has fuel, but not even a kick. My son in law heard that there is plastic timing gear that may have stripped and we are preparing to take the thing apart to investigate. has anyone else had this issue, or can confirm that this is a likely culprit?
Any advice is appreciated.

If the timing gear stripped your compression will be low, not sure if they used those aluminum & nylon cam gears in that engine

Unless.......

Is it still points ignition? I would check to see if the points are opening and closing. Not sure of the gap....maybe .018" - .022" IIRC.

I think the plastic gear known as the silent gear came in in the early 70's, also check the ballast resistor. I sold a 300K and it wouldn't start when the guy came to see it from 2 hours away, fired but would die immediately. We both worked on it for a hour and he told me if I got it running to call him. A hour after he left I kicked myself and waited a hour and called him. He kicked himself and the next day I drove to him and he purchased the car. Maybe both sides went out, if not having a spare in the trunk is like a spare electronic control module in the trunk of a 70's mopar. Quick repair just in case.

It looks like there was an early, and late cam sprocket in '65, the late one is the same as the one used in 1970 which, if I remember correctly, has the nylon teeth. If yours is the nylon one I would put a new(non-nylon) timing set in. The nylon ones pretty much suck. If you find that you do have the nylon sprocket, and it is falling apart, I would take the oil pan off and clean it out, and clean the oil pick-up too. Let us know what you find.

My '67 440 had its original cam gear with the nylon teeth and with almost 136,000 miles on it was still in fine shape. I replaced with a double roller timing set of course but was amazed at how good it's condition was, even the chain was not stretched.

Oh, I feel like an idiot... I had another rknowledgeable friend come over and I had the coil pack wired backwards. She's Alive, now to get new belts on her, new plug wires and find the fouled plugs, and she might actually be road worthy. Yea:yaayy:

No just a brain fart, every other car I own has them. but as always you were there to correct me.
