66 Chrysler 300 - 440 Engine Options

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in '66 a "G" meant 383 - any 383, standard, Hi-Po, whatever. If I'm right, wouldn't it stand to be the same case for the 440? One letter, multiple possibilities? If so, that would explain the single exhaust, etc.
That is what I'm thinking too, but all the literature indicates only one 440 engine was available - the 440 TNT. Maybe the build sheet has different codes for the two 440s. . .

From what I'm reading in the dealership stuff, the 350hp version was only available in the New Yorker where it was the standard engine. It wasn't available as an option or standard engine in anything else.

According to the white book J was the only 440 in '66 so you'd have to see the engine code on the fender tag to determine which one was ordered.
I said this earlier...

Good post.

VINs in 66 are a little different than in following years. The actual engine received is contingent on the application.

Snotty nailed it. In '66, a G code only tells you the car got a 383. It does not tell you which 383 ( 2 or 4 bbl) came in the car. You have to look at the application to determine which engine came in the car. A G code Belvedere is a 383-4bbl. A G code Fury could be a 383-2bbl or 383-4bbl.

The J code only tells you the car got a 440. It does not tell you which 440 came in the car. Both the 350 (engine code 81 on the fender tag) and 365 horse TNT (Engine code 82) will show a J in the VIN.

According to the data book, the 350 horse was standard with the 365 horse optional in the New Yorker. Only the 365 horse was optional in the 300. So....a J code 300 would indicate engine 82 the 365 horse version.

(This is the same as the 68-70 H code 383. The H only tells you the car got a 383-4bbl not which version of the 383-4, the 330 or 335 horse. You have to look at the application)

Ripinator, check the fender tag, I'm guessing you will see 82 under the AB code.

My 66' Blue mopar book shows duals available in 66 model Chrysler with 440 engines, but with the same exhaust manifold numbers, single or dual. It also shows only one J engine @365 HP. In 67' the K' engine for 350 HP was made, (single exhaust)and L for the TNT 375.(High flow manifolds dual only) This letter can also be found on the bottom of the 915 head, K is cast in the head with the small exhaust valve, and L on the head with the larger valve, Done in 1967 only. I have a set of both heads sitting on the bench. However, I have
also seen somewhere the performance 440 was advertised in some brochures in the day. it could be they were referring to the dual snorkel and dual exhaust feature, nothing else. Always a mystery with Mopars.

I have to correct my previous post, as 69coronetrt has a great deal of experience. the 350 HP was available in 66' and is the single exhaust engine. Same J code.sorry about that!

67 hp 915 castings heads have 1.74 exhaust valves
Non hp have 1.60
66 should have 516 castings with 1.60 exhaust valves. No 1.74 exhaust valves in 516 heads.

Sure enough guys. . . There is a code '82' under 'AB' on the fender tag. So I guess what we have here is a 440 TNT. Woo Hoo!

Now about that single exhaust. . .

But, that's not true for 1970. In '70, the 2bbl 383 was designated by an L. The HP 383 was the N.

The analogy was to the 68-70 383 H/N code. The letter only tells you the car received a 383-4bbl. It does not tell you which 383-4 the car received. You have to look at the application to determine which version of a 383-4 the car came with.

All 68-70 383-4s HP 335 horse cars code H/N but not all H/N coded cars are HP.

In '66, all 440 TNT 365 horse cars code J but not all J code cars are 440 TNT.

I'm sure we will see that when you post a picture of the tag ;)

Don't have a picture of the fender tag here, but here is the decode I did for the tag on the Dodge Charger site. The tag layout / content is at the end of the listing:
