'68 Fury III fast top -- drives better than it did 20 years ago!

Got the Fury home now, fits into the garage with about an inch to spare. Drives and stops better than it did 20 years ago! Got the kids to help get some of the grime out. Still stinky (every day I find another mummified mouse or another old mousenest + turdpile) but getting better. It's amazing how the black hides the dings, scratches, and rust...

Drove it for a couple hours today, just cruising around and having fun. I had to take a shower as soon as I went into the house to get rid of the exhaust and mouse stink, but who cares.

Thanks. Saylor if you or anyone else up there in dfw is frustrated finding mechanics (can't remember, was that you out the other 68 dfw guy who was getting the runaround), down here in Austin I've had some great work done within budget and WAY faster than expected at Great Hills Automotive. Ken and his guys there work on all muscle/classic stuff but have done enough Mopar s to be trustworthy with them. I can't believe how fast they turned my fury around.

Love that Plymouth. Its such a cool thing to tool around in an old classic car, I couldn't be any happier with mine, as I am sure you are with yours. Ya gotta get that exhaust fixed though, to much breathing of that in the car will kill brain cells--permanently. Sounds like a good excuse for some TTI's?

If the TTi kit isn't in the budget I had my 68 Fury system custom built at the exhaust shop. Price with Chrome tips was 275. Not including the mufflers. I bought my own. That system is 2 1/4" From Manifolds back. True Dual exhaust with an H Pipe. It runs into 3" Chrome Tips. I brought the car in that morning and was ready around 3 in the afternoon. I have used that shop several times. They are old school. Its a father and son that do the work.

Yea, indeed the TTI setup requires deeper pockets, but competent muffler shops can hook you up too. Where I live there's a guy who runs a Meineke muffler shop (hold your fire)....I know him personally and he drives a 72' Plymouth 440 Cuda to and from his shop...gotta find somewhere like that.

You know, the smell my wife complains about isn't technically exhaust stink I guess... just overall old-car stink wafting up from the interior and coming back at me from under the hood, plus that general "outside smell" from tinkering and driving around with the windows down.

When I took delivery of the car from storage in January and was setting priorities for repairs, I realized the exhaust didn't actually leak. (My mechanic made the same point as he was inspecting it and making recommendations, another point in his favor since he could have easily sold me on a new system.) Old farty glasspacks but no leaks.

I have new valve cover gaskets so there are no current oil leaks but there's still residue from old leaks that makes its way onto the manifolds so I'm still getting some of that roasted oil smell; that's a lot of the issue.

So the upshot: yes, if it was truly an exhaust leak I'd be about to put a new system on instead of new tires (currently still rolling on the cheapo 235/70s that have been on it since the early 1990s).

Jason, thanks for the tip... when I do finally get exhaust, I will seriously consider coming down to the SA area to this shop you recommend. I haven't been able to find a mom-n-pop exhaust shop here in the Austin area with good recommendations... hearing about a lot of sketchy guys who overcharge, undertrained kids, bad bends, sloppy welds, etc. That's what was pushing me to the $600+ TTI kit. But for half that price and a good recommendation, I'll make a 200-mile round trip! Hell, that's $50 worth of gas and a bottle of lead additive (which I got by the case off Amazon).

That's a really good price man .. I like the non chain Mom and Pops or Son and Pops shops too when you can find one
