Another orphan found our driveway...

Kinda a useless day.. got a late start. Did move the engine forward one set of holes is the crossmember perches. Much better for firewall clearence. Need to modify the trans crossmember. There needs to be a slight tilt of the engine, and trans. It’s still running into the floor pan. Some small spacers should accommodate that I hope. It’s either that, or body lift time. Really don’t want to do that...

How's the clearance up front, did you get to test fit the core support?

The official redneck tool for transmission clearancing...

I don't know these trucks well enough, how different is the cab floor and frame crossmember? I would have though the parts would swap easier.

Haven’t had a chance to get the core support back in place yet. It’s gonna be close!!!! It’s gonna need some modifying as well.

I still need to make sure the oil pan is gonna fit. I’ll be screwed if it doesn’t..

Seriously, starting out, I would have it being a given the engine would literally fall into that truck.
I better stick with Formals.
You're doing absolutely great, Zach.

You would think right? It’s amazing. Thanks!

They did this swap on Hot Rod Garage

I’ve watched these atleast a dozen times! Love that truck! Wish they would go more in depth with the swap though.

They had it worse, keeping the 2nd gen motor mounts. Think they would have been better using these 1st gen ones.

I did notice in a small clip, they built their own trans crossmember out of tubing.

Is that still a three speed trans Zach or is it a 518 od. The OD has a fat end on it and most likely need a new crossmember /mount.

Watched the clips @65sporty posted... now I'm really thinking things are off.

Some few thoughts, that may actually help, or can be ignored.

If the oil pan or anything else makes it look like you will have to get into the kind of frame modifications the video guys did... would you be better off swapping the frame along with the driveline? Seems to me swapping suspensions and the bed/front clip would be the easier way.

After all of your work on the cab, I hate to say it, but that bigger tunnel would get me thinking about stripping and painting the parts truck cab and letting the old one go to waste. Yes, I would swap numbers.

I am sorry, I see how much work would be redone to get clearance right. I personally didn't think much of their "jack handle" transmission mount... It may have worked, but if you get the transmission on too much of an angle from the rear, the driveshaft will have problems.

Not trying to be a bummer...

It’s a 518. Im using the crossmember that came out of the cummins truck. The 518 crossmember lands 2 3/8” further back then the 727 one. And needs to come down 1/2”-3/4” to not be in the floor pan.

It was a bit bigger ehh? But the parts truck is gone. No more cab to steal, and I wouldn’t want to get that far into body work and paint again. If it gets that bad, like I say it’s time to do a small body lift. Hopefully the 1/2” or so lower mount won’t affect the driveline terribly.

Zach if I were you I would slice the truck cab lengthwise from toe board to where tailshaft housing tapers away on top of the hump, and a cross cut where tailshaft housing bolts to case. Then with a pry or crow bar bump the floor up out of the way to clear trans. When you get it all installed and running you can weld a section in to fill the gap. My 2 cents.

That has hope...

I bet a couple 1/4" plate shims in the body mounts wouldn't hurt the looks a bit...:) You have been scheming... I knew it:steering:

It's been a while since I watched the HRG video's, so I don't remember all the did to swap it in. I guess I was just assuming the frames were very similar and it would just fall in there.

Had to take the big ***** out one more time. Damn oil pan wouldn’t slip in. Luckily with the cab propped up, was able to get the whole assembly back in.

I made up some 1/2” spacers for the trans crossmember, and have them bolted to it. I’ll tack them in place, and fully weld them tomorrow, when there’s some light to see. Hope to god that’s the last time she has to come out!!

Trans clears everything now, except for one spot, where it’s hitting a weld/tunnel. Hoping to persuade it once I get the trans mounted securely.
