Budd Caliper's

I took the leaking caliper apart and one half had the black piston in with a different kind of seal I have a feeling as it has no tail it may have caught on a bit of corrosion on the cylinder wall (it’s stood for a year while I was fitting the SRT8 motor)and flipped slightly and stuck and let fluid passed
I tried a local seal manufacturer to get some new seals they didn’t have anything in stock but surprisingly the said they could make me some.
I get them Wednesday I’ll see if that fixes it.

I Picked up the seals and fitted them, bled the system ran the car up and applied the brakes really hard dozens of times and no leaks from the pistons so fingers crossed I've cured the leak need to road test it for a while to make sure their ok when theres some heat going through them.
one slight problem the bleeder hex is rounded i have a spare pair of calipers with a good bleeder in but it won't seal the ends are different the original one is more pointed the spare calipers dont have a brass seat in the caliper and the bleeder is blunter and seats direct the machined surface of the bleed hole
so has any body got the part number for the sharper ended ones?
Top one is the brass seat one

Hi, how is your remanufactured seals hold up? I think I have to do same thing to budd calibers.
Best regards

To be totally honest I’ve only done a few hundred miles in it had a couple of problems with tcu programming (sorted now) and then was waiting for some adjustable dampers to be made for it and now waiting for a pair of new rear leaf springs to be made
But they work fine and there no signs of any leaks

My R1 concepts calipers will be here this week. While waiting, I took my leaking caliper apart. I will need to fix it anyway if they new ones don’t work.
It looks like debris sits in the piston bore and eventually gets between the ridiculously thin piston seals.

I real don’t see how these calipers don’t leak ALL the time. Between the thin seal and large amount of play the piston has in the bore it is miracle they work at all.
I have them all cleaned and ready to reassemble if the R1 calipers do not fit.
I may take them to work and bead blast them and repaint with something better than what’s on it. The current paint does not stand up to brake cleaner. I will get some caliper paint

I really hope the R1 calipers work because I am really not impressed with these BUDD calipers.

Calipersonline builds them strong. Just took the imperial out and it brakes harder than a new Honda. Whew

I wonder whether yours have been apart in the past as your pistons dont have a tail on them to help them stop tipping in the cylinder?

I believe they have. The bores look re-sleeved and the P.O had just installed these and rotors when i bought the car. I dont know who did the rebuild.

Well, I just received my re-man calipers by R1 concepts, ordered through Carid.
I must say, they are much better than expected. I was expecting the worst and was ready to send them back before I even got them.
Looks like all new pistons, even though they still rock side to side quite a bit like the other ones. I can't believe someone hasn't designed a square seal for these yet. New hardware. Very clean. All flat surfaces and mounting surfaces seem to have been machined, no pits in the metal. All threads very nice.
They dont say BUDD on them though...

The bag had this bar code on them and "Korea" so i'm guessing they were not done in the USA.

I SOOO badly want to disassemble these and see if the quality extends into the insides also but will probably refrain from doing so.
NO CORE CHARGE
It looks as though they still list a few R1 calipers in stock, as well as some from Dynamic friction. It also seems like the price has gone up since last week by $40.
I called R1 concepts, and they no longer offer these, so these must old stock.
I will install these tommorow morning and hopefully be able to drive my car again.

Well, I have to amend some of the above info. When I ordered the calipers from Carid, the description stated they were made by R1 concepts. In my excietment to see the calipers, I did not read the boxes. The calipers I received are actually made by DFC--Dynamic Friction company. Same part number as the R1 concepts listing. I ordered the R1 calipers, I just double checked my original order.

Usually I would be pissed, BUT after seeing what seems to be a quality product, I will let it slide for now.

I am getting ready to head out and install these. The more I look at them, the more I think they are new units, not reman's

I can just about guarantee they are the same parts, made in the same factory.

Very few of these suppliers actually make everything they sell. They may sell things under their label, but it's really the same parts, just in a different box.
