Love those 284º cams, the nicest lope at idle, like music. Many times I saw or thought I saw chiquitas dancing to it subconsciously...
 
and of course the older 318's 230 gross hp rating meant the net hp was about 150 so when you compare that to the dakota's 220 + net hp you can see that the later 318 is considerably more powerful.
just like how a late 70s 440 with its 195 net hp is roughly bout 260 -280 gross hp
 
I heard from someone that was involved in modern engine design (in the last 20 years, that is) and he said:
Generally speaking, in modern engines, when picking between OEM cylinder heads, the newer cylinder head will give lower emissions, more efficiency and more power.

OEM engineers are constantly working to maximize those characteristics, therefore the newer one's ports and combustion chamber are better.
