Distraction can be deadly

I drive a public transit bus and have so for 32 years. I drive across the University of Washington campus (Seattle) five days a week right now. Not all students are looking at their cell phones, but many are! So they are not paying attention as my bus approaches. Many are wearing ear-buds listening to their phone/ipod so they probably don't hear the noise of the engine as my bus gets closer to them. My blood pressure goes up as I go across campus, particularly when classes let out and thousands of student pour out of numerous classrooms onto the sidewalks to get to their next class. I haven't hit anyone yet, but I do watch them like a proverbial 'hawk'. I always breathe a sigh of relief when I get across campus and away from all those students, many of which are not paying a whole lot of attention to their surroundings. Am surprised there aren't more accidents on campus. Guess it's a blessing there aren't, or at least I haven't seen them!

A 23 year old woman was killed by a Muni bus a few weeks ago in the City also. She had the light as she moved in the crosswalk and the bus driver was in the wrong. Traffic cam video showed that but it also showed the woman staring intently at her phone to the point she never heard nor even looked up at the bus. Had she looked she would be alive today. This I have seen myself. Lucky for me because when I lived there we had Russian immigrants who would simply walk against the green light as though it wasn't there. Being the driver I am I aimed for them to put the fear of God into them if not tap a few of them. :rant:Hehehe. Of course, if they looked like Yaroslava, in the ad above, I might have stopped and offered help across :eek:s_dancing2:

Probably end up on a tin can in heavy seas...

Wasn't around when battleships were still floating around

The battleship USS Wisconsin was deployed and tore up some *** in Desert Storm in 1991......

Battery 9 rounds of 16" guns......that's like shooting 9 Volkswagon's through the air at the same time. The battleship pushes back 1,000 feet when it shoots a Battery 9. Now this is BADASS!!!!

That's right, I stand corrected. How much we forget over time. It was pulled out of "mothballs" so to speak, right? It was not on active duty until it was summoned, or was it? Now its back in dry dock or as a museum?

Yes.....

They say that if the country needs a battleship in the future....they can get her ready quick. I personally doubt that will ever happen again.

The war will be over before Congress would come to a conclusion to shell out the needed money.

"Tin can sailor", hey I resemble that remark. I don't think hi tech is really required with a New Jersey class battleship. If your on the receiving end of just one of those 2000# high explosive within 100yds. You will be pointing to your ears saying you can't hear not to mention the mess in your underpants. Now figure on 6-12 of those bad boys headed your way at the same time, watch out. I saw the New Jersey fire some rounds when I was in, that leaves a lasting impression hell just seeing it cruise by I impressive low to the water guns all over, kind of like a imperial driving by no noise or flash just a presence.

Every hear of the AEGIS AN/SPY-1 system? Heavy tech aboard guided missile cruisers, only reason why I asked.

Not cost effective to retrofit with modern tech?

Yep, no need to update a 16" gun. It'll update whatever it hits.......or is near it.
