"Back in the day" this was called a production engine and they installed it that way...lol. If you've seen a lot of OEM blocks you realized they will run almost ANYTHING. That break is not in any structural area.

Most of the ones that "were installed that way" usually had the area around the breakage at least burred to remove any jagged areas. Agreed, if it would run long enough to get it out the door, it probably would have shipped. A lot of these types of quality control issues became "goodies" for the dealer network later on via a warranty claim. I have no idea how many went out the door with this type of damage because we would not have noticed it unless the engine was in for a warranty tear down for evaluation. If we found a break like this on inspection, especially if any debris were present, we would replace the engine.
