Finally my own '70 Sport Fury GT

Bought some NOS early production Challenger tips for the car. Might ruffle a few E-body purist that their beloved parts are going on a C-body lol. Maybe some day I'll get lucky and find a correct set at Carlisle. These will have to do for now.

Interesting to note, whoever purchased these Dodge Challenger tips back in 1981 ordered them through a Chrysler-Plymouth dealer lol

Picked up some new headlight bulbs for less then $10 bux a piece from NAPA since half of them were burnt out. I'll find some OE style bulbs in the future but for now these will do. Was able to verify the time delay headlights work too! Also got some old stock GE heavy duty 1156/1157 replacement bulbs for the tail lights. The car should have no issue passing inspection now.

I was surprised by a text this afternoon from Tom (the son of the original owner).

The red '69 Road Runner is the car that was traded in at the dealer for the GT. The bottom photo of the GT was when the car was brand new!

I told Tom if I have the car ready for Carlisle 2021 it would be awesome to meet there. He said he'll try his best to attend!

Pulled the '71 AVS carb off for a rebuild.

Pretty nasty in there..

Took all the steel peices & soaked them in Evaporust to clean them up. The rest of the parts I let soak in some Chem-dip carb cleaner.

New gaskets/accelerator pump/needle & seats/adjusted the floats and back together it went. I reused the jets/metering rods that were already in it.

Should be good enough to get it down the road.

After installing the freshly rebuilt carb I still wasnt able to get the engine running 100% Also a pretty loud knocking noise was being emitted from the front of the engine. After dwelling on it for a day I came to the realization that this car probably still had its original timing chain after 95k miles & 50 years...

So popping the distributor cap off and grabbing the crank I was able to rock the crankshaft 20 degrees before the distributor rotor had any noticeable movement..

Time for a new chain!

Pulling the front cover off revealed a very worn original timing set & some very nasty build up. YUCK!

OEM garbage nylon sprocket & stretched chain. Should have been replaced 40k miles ago. Probably why the car was taken off the road in the late '80s if I had to guess. I'm really really surprised it didnt jump a tooth to be honest.

Spent some time cleaning the front of the block free of the sludge buildup. I left the pan on to catch most of the mess since I knew I was gonna be pulling it off anyways.

Luckily the oil pan will basically fall out of a big block c-body by only disconnecting the drag link (which revealed some pretty worn linkage in itself..)

More YUCK

20210509_133717.jpg

Spent about an hour and half with a variety of picks & screwdrivers to completly clean out every single broken chunk of nylon spocket in the pickup tube.

Lots more scrapping and a few soakings in some cheap oven cleaner / power washer got the oil pan and timing cover cleaned up nicely.

New Howard Cams double roller timing chain set. Took a lot of restraint to not put a small cam in this engine. I really want to experience driving a stock 440 first lol.

With the oil pan off I also noticed a yellow paint mark on the subframe. Anyone else have seen this on their car? Documented for a future restoration.

New Felpro front end seal set. Also picked up one of those 2 in 1 windage tray gaskets off Summit. It is a sweet piece! Easily installed with the engine in the car too.

I had always thought Chrysler just grabbed Challenger tips from the parts bin to throw on the C bodies, but I was wrong...

Challenger tips you saw above...

GT tips had hangar tabs and more curvy pipes on them

Genuine Sport Fury GT tips are about impossible to find these days. The 300 Hurst guys suck as it seems they bought up all the tips over the last 50 years even though they technically arent correct for those cars lol :mob:

Next time I see a Hurst with those tips I'll have to con the owner into selling them :poke:

I love knowing those little details. Like the Exhaust tips for my 70 swinger are identical to 68 69 Barracuda tips with the small exception of 70 tips have a 1/2 longer hangar bracket for rear Valance clearance. The devil is truly in the details with these cars to get them just right.
