Heat Riser

Here is my heat riser valve that has no hardware on it at all. It does move freely by hand but does move when the engine rpm is raised. Is this in the open or closed position?

When the weight is down the heat riser should be open. Heat weakens the spring and the weight moves the butterfly to the open position. If the car has dual exhaust, you will only get exhaust out of one pipe until the heat riser opens. Yours appears to missing the spring.

I am guessing you can find the spring somewhere.

@Davea Lux will know, but my guess is this helps with the warm up for the bimetallic choke well.

My FSM says lube the mechanism at every oil change. I hit mine with PB Blaster.

so with the spring missing then this should be in the open position correct?
