Impster - the big&white

I had similar surface rust issues in the trunk floor of a 70 Newport, 35 years ago. Humidity. Age. It just happens.

Impster is a weirdo. No cracks or faded areas inside (save the T/T steering wheel), but rust spots here and there. It´s hard to think that the weather of Finland would have done it all in about 20 years after being in CA before.
But then dad has his 79 LeBaron, which was imported when new and it had badly faded parts inside, but not very much corrosion.:wideyed:

Quality of steel, Quality of paint in non visible areas, Quality of/lack of galvanic coating...one or all the above...

Chrysler started using better quality (galvanized) steel in mid to late 60’s. Rust proofing started getting better in industry in mid 70’s. Generally a stronger emphasis on quality started to occur in the industry in the 1980’s. However there were some mismanagement/bad quality issues/scandals at Chrysler in late 70’s that left it in a financial mess. Then Mr. Iacocca stepped in....

Today´s visit (again) included sanding, but also I painted the trunk partially with primer and the metal surrounding the license plate lamp, so I can assemble the whole panel that has also the reverse lights mounted to it.
I failed to hold the camera correctly, but still:

Looks a bit rough now, but she will be gorgeous.
Keep up the good work! :thumbsup:

The same ole safe work was going on today: sanding and painting.
Also I test fitted the left fender skirt, which still needs some adjusting to get it really fit well and I replaced the parking light bulbs with wrong units (orange, not yellow), so they´ll be once again replaced.

The smooth left brake rotor tells that I have to track one to replace the right brake rotor. It´s not that bad (shouldn´t say that), because Impster passed the safety inspection last April and the brake doesn´t feel bad when driving...
The joints are also on this side nice, new and lubed.:)

The rocker panels have been painted by one of the POs. I think that they´re on the list for another winter.

You’re gonna need a lot of Appliance Gloss White, there. A lot. But one day, she’ll be sleek. She’ll be gleaming.

One day. In winter. Or at the end of winter.

Actually I´m going to Stirwell (a local paint shop) with one of the fender skirts next Saturday to get the correct white.

EW1 = Spinnaker White

Chrysler and Imperial offered it as Spinnaker White. Dodge called it Eggshell White and only Plymouth used name Alpine white.

Nautical paint on an aircraft body, doesn´t that sound cool?

Yippee!

The spare tire/wheel is attached only for show off purposes due to a too small bolt pattern. I know that the current exhaust system is nothing close to the factory pipes, but at least it´s now closer. The next (again dual) system will be clamped, but it´ll come after more than a few years.

@detmatt

Thank you Matt! These are exactly what I was looking for. Next step will be cleaning and painting the centers and areas behind the radial fins.

Excellent! I’m glad they will live on.:thumbsup:

I was bird watching today and found a rare orange center eagle.

Time for the Saturday update:

I installed the right front door panel and dad painted the left rear quarter and right front fender where needed. The ``bomb factory`` was actually used for mixing paint.

For those wondering about what the 67-69 wheel covers look like on a 72-73:
