looks like another sleepless night
Funny how everyone is different. In Paris and Rome a few years ago my wife and I slept with the windows open even as the night life continued past midnight and street vendors and cleanup crews were out again at 4:30 a.m.. For us the sounds of a foreign city at night were like a lullaby.

We are Chevron as well and part of my wife's team and responsibility is in Kazakhstan so she travels there regularly.
I was in Moscow for a business trip in 2006. I was walking in the tunnel under Red Square, there were two guys in front of me, and another a little bit behind me. One of the guys in front dropped a plastic bag with a roll so 100 dollar bills, at least, that was what was on the outside. I walked on, but he guy behind me picked it up and ran up to me and started pointing at the guy in from while trying to hand the wad to me. I said, No, No and turned and walked on. It was a set up, if I had taken the wad, I would have been accused of taking some of the money. Ya gotta watch out.
I spent one day touring the subway and visiting all of the subway stations that had art/statues. It was agreat day. I started to understand the cryllic writing!

Thanks for all of the pictures.
Are they still allowed to use the words "Ladies and Gentlemen" on the PA system? It is now considered politically incorrect in NYC as some passengers feel offended by the phrase. I recently met with a friend for supper in Manhattan. During our subway ride, we were calling each other "passenger" so as not to offend anyone.
I thought that I heard sometime in the last year or so that the Russians have become fairly conservative and really want nothing to do with political correctness or alternative lifestyles. Have you noticed any of this?

Alternative lifestyles are frowned upon from the highest levels to pretty much everybody I have met so far (but remember I live in a non Russian speaking English language bubble). Nationalism seems to be very strong. Just had an interesting conversation with someone who favorite movie is probably something like "Operation Dinner Out" and it was noted that there is a strong push from a young age to expose the populace to things on subliminal basis that help to reinforce the Nationalist point of view. On a completely different note I have seen several parks where military equipment has been re purposed as play ground equipment......

OK I know you guys thought I was whinging when I mentioned that the snow removal crews that kept me awake at night. Well today because we have had so much snow they are working day shifts to catch-up. Here is a video of that process as they move down the block towards me. This usually happens around 2:30 to 4:00 am.

What the frig? I thought Moscow winters were legendary. The heaviest snowfall in 100 years was 17 inches in one weekend? And complaining about -12 Celcius (10 degrees F)? Man, Detroit doesn't get as cold or snowy as it did back in the 70s, but 17 inches and 10 degrees wouldn't faze anyone living here...

17" was the daily total. At my place we had between 13" and 19" a day for 6 days. Both airports closed and my flight back to USA cancelled. I finially got out but it was -4 F with about 3/4 inch of ice on the road to the airport at 2 am. Them the f ing passport control guy held me for an hour and a half because he said the stitching on my passport looked like it had been tampered with. It was just a gotch' ya.
