Refurbish time

Just a quick update. The advertised price of 499.00 for 906 heads at the aerohead website is bogus. They are really 599.00. The guy wouldn't honor the price advertised, so I politely told him we will not be able to do business together. C' est la vie bro.

I have a local place doing my heads for me.

I'm having the shop add hardened seats. I like to drive my car so it makes sense.

I really can't imagine why you wouldn't do this. The added cost of hardened seats can't be much compared to the rest of the work you're doing. So not doing it when you have everything apart really wouldn't make sense.

I'm looking forward to more updates as they come. My engine has purred along better than I thought when I bought the car, but it's never far from my mind that it is nearly 50 years old, with 160,000 miles on it. Seeing someone else go through this is very helpful!

well the reasons are detailed some of which I've already mentioned so I won't beat a dead horse. Resf assured I'm happy now. I'll update as I go.along.

BTW: what head gaskets are popular amongst the crowd here? I usually use Fel-pro gaskets elsewhere, but I noticed there are a gazillion other manufactures for the same item...Mopar Performance, Mr. Gasket, Edelbrock, Manely(?)....just to mention a few. I've had zero problems with Fel-pro gaskets...but haven't used them between block and cylinder heads.

So I'm starting to clean up and prepare the block mating surfaces.....but what is this cakey white crap on top of some of the pistons? Seems like its crystallized......???

I'd bet that residue is from crappy ethanol gas. It looks like the same $hit that was inside my old Harley Linkert carburetor when I took it apart to replace the float that the ethanol gas destroyed. After you get it all back together, marine 2-cycle oil with TCW-3 should help.

I'm going to guess but I would think its the same residue as the black cakey stuff that has just been burned hotter from its proximity to the hottest part of the combustion. Rip could be right though, it may not look like that if it weren't for the **** gas.

Thanks guys. I was looking at it again last night, guess I'll have to scrap it off somehow. No doubt some will get inside the cylinders....I got compressed air to blow it all out. Otherwise doesn't look too bad. I've seen motors with chunky, sewage looking crap all inside.

I've heard theories on what the white crap is, but never found a good answer. I have seen it many years before they started putting ethanol in gas, so it's not related to that.

My guess is that its not hurting anything by being there and I would just leave it.
