Replacing fuel lines on my ‘78 NYB 400. Must I use the return line?

By return line, do you mean the vapory recovery line that goes to the emissions pot? Or do you have a bypass line on your fuel pump?

It’s the 3rd line that splits off the vapor separator at the fuel pump; 1 line comes off pump, second one to carb, 3rd (return) to a steel line on frame.

The vapor return line is also your fuel tank vent. If you plug it the tank will go into vacuum on a long drive. On some models, a vented fuel cap can be installed if the return line is plugged. You would have to check to see if there is an older model fuel cap that will fit your application.
