Hi everyone
My transmission in a 67 chrysler newport shifts hard from 1 -2 and doesnt shift until about 23 miles per hour and motor at high rpm. Then from 2 -3 at about 45Mph.
oil level is full. Is there any adjustments? or should i take to transmission shop, Do the newer transmission shops know how to service 727s
thanks i dont want to do any damage.

Check your linkage. Maybe it is out of adjustment. Look in the manual and it will show you the proper adjustment procedure. It is not hard to do.

Agree on the linkage adjustment as specified in the Chrysler Factory Service Manual. It might not be a big deal this time of the year, BUT that adjustment must be made when the carb is at "hot base idle" only, as the adjustment is based upon the throttle being in that lowest idle speed (i.e., normal idle speed) of about 550-650rpm.

Now, did this shifting issue begin suddenly or has it been building for a while? Has anything been done to the engine prior to this issue? Carb and/or intake manifold change? Which carb and intake on the motor now? Just curious.

In doing the adjustment, seems like there are some "gauge holes" in the linkage bellcrank mechanism at the back of the intake manifold? With the linkage unhooked from the carb pin, stick a small screwdriver into those holes to keep things where they need to be. Then check where the front end of the slot in the arm is in relation to the carb's throttle linkage stud. If everything "topside" is right, the slot should not slide onto the stud without moving the linkage rearward a bit. Like two thread-lengths on the rear part of the linkage rod.

IF the linkage adjustment does not change the shiftpoints downward to a min-throttle 1-2 upshift at about 10mph or so (check the speed chart for such in the FSM), then there might be an issue with the transmission governor.

x2 on linkage adjustment. A simple job but do all the FSM steps in order to verify full carb opening, etc. When I first got my car it would not downshift, did the adjustment and it worked perfectly.

Are you checking the fluid level correctly? Preferably hot and always with engine running at idle in neutral.

Yea, this is basic stuff, but I've had more than one guy say "I didn't know that" and once they got the level correct, it all worked right.

it shifted fairly smooth before but the transmission came from another car only drove it a couple miles before it was pulled along with the motor and put in this car. it is a 2 barrel carb but could it make a difference if the kick down was set for a 4 barrel?

Let's start with a photo or two of the drivers side of the carburetor where the throttle and transmission linkage attaches.

20+ years ago I replaced the carb on my car.
Right after, on the test drive, the trans was slipping. I knew about the KD linkage and its purpose, but it was fine before.
Went to a trans shop, a Mopar specialist ironically, and told him the story. He advised of lots of seals, rings, etc that could cause pressure loss and slippage.
$1000 estimate for a mild-performance rebuild. For behind a 318 2-barrel. Ouch.

Being skeptical because the problem happened after a carb change, I went to another shop that had a good rep and told him the same story.
He told me to pop the hood, and he spun the KD adjuster a few turns and told me to go around the block.
It was better, not still not right. He gave it a few turns and sent me away again - it was perfect.
I came back excited and asked him how much. He said 'no charge' and sent me on my way.
Although I don't remember, I'll embellish that he had a cigarette drooping from his lip the entire time.

When I returned home, and compared the 2 carbs, the bracket on the new one had clearly been re-welded on the shaft and was not quite in the correct place.

Yes.
It matters also between B and RB engines, the vertical rod is a different length.

It may not look the same as the OP's but this should be similar. The back of the slot should be just touching the pin on the carb linkage. That's a good place to start. Basically, when the carb is at full throttle the kickdown lever(throttle pressure lever) on the transmission should be wide open. Have someone push the gas pedal to the floor. That may not open the carb all the way and the cable can be adjusted accordingly. Then you follow up with the transmission kickdown adjustment.

This first photo needs a little more adjustment. See the gap at the back of the slot? This transmission will shift early and at slow speeds. It may also slip if left out of adjustment too long.
