Well I'm getting on with the Fury, it's now running pretty well thanks to a new pertronix distributor (old one had over 30 thou lateral play at the cam ) new Accel coil (old one was a ballast coil with no resistor), plugs (broken tip insulators and bent contacts), Accel 8mm plug leads (originals held together with insulting tape).

So I'm thinking that if the dizzy is that worn, the original 2 barrel carb probably is too, which leads me to my question, what to replace it with?

Your thoughts would be welcome. TIA.

I would guess the first question is what do you want from this 318? And what don't you have now that you would like?

It's a big soggy old sedan with drums all round, so I'm not looking to make it fly.
I don't want to spend a fortune on the car either, but if I can keep it mostly stock and give it a bit more pep without breaking the bank that's the way I'd like to go.

There ya go !! Nothing wrong with drum brakes either if they are working well. My 69 fury has drums and I am fine with it. Hell I am still running points and don't plan to change either. Old school baby!!

I hadn't planned on swapping the distributor, but at under 40 dollars Canadian for the Pertronix unit which looks just like the std unit, it was a cheap fix.

I have heard great things about the Pertronix unit. I was and will consider it if my points become too much of a pain in the @ss

Stick with the 2 bbl. Buy the time you find a 4bbl manifold for a poly, buy a good carb, air filter housing, kick down linkage ... You'll be looking at $7-800.00. Then you'll need a cam to make it work right.

Just my honest opinion, there is no point in buying a new two barrel. They all perform pretty much the same when set up right.

I run the original 2bbl on both my 318's, one poly and one LA. Both run great, smooth and responsive. Either one is a tire smokeing, hot rod, but economy and drivability is excellent, and that's what 318's are all about.
I've towed a 3500 lb vintage travel trailer over 15K miles in the past year and a half with my 69 318 2bbl LA in a Fury wagon. And a lot of that was in Tenn, Kentucky, North Carolina and Virginia mountains.

Well, the point has become moot, went out this afternoon with the Mrs to go and visit friends, got about 20 miles from home and the motor started knocking and making a nasty screeching sound, home on a flatbed.
Maybe time for an unleaded LA motor and plentiful tuning options.
I'll have a look at it when I get the chance but my garage is currently occupied by my 02 Mercury Grand Marquis which has been laid low by a defective clock-spring.

Agreed, spun rod bearing. If you're gonna go with an la, you could also go magnum for not much more. Either way, I'd go 360 vs 318. More torque = easier to move C-barge
Travis..
