Scenicruisin'..?

Mash the pedal, let off wait for the rpm fall, stick it in the next gear. Downshift is the same but you have to gas it in neutral to raise rpm to match next gear. It takes a minute to learn, bad thing is when I get into my bro in laws Challenger and do the same thing he gets nervous. Lol
Best advice I got from my father in law when you run out of rpms stick it the next gear. Same for downshifting only backwards.

hmm...how come you don't stall when you let RPM's fall and you're still in gear? thought clutch was needed so you could disengage from a given gear, let alone go into another?

again my experience is only with passenger cars/trucks. no class 8 rigs in my skill set

See its so natural I didn't mention you slack the driveline pull into neutral wait for rpm fall stick into next gear at correct time. Like I said takes a minute to learn.

We have discussed it here before but I would like to try a 5+4 trans.

thanks for the mini-tutorial.

i watched that video I posted and listened to engine sound closely...except when he was flipping switches on the stick from L to H, each shift was TWO motions. the first being out of gear to neutral, pause 1/2 sec while RPM drops, then shift into next gear.

so twelve forward gears I counted, plus reverse, is 13 speeds. and apparently you DONT have to "clutch" to pull/push into neutral or another gear...just manage RPMs properly via the gas pedal.

since my Scenicruiser must have an automatic tranny (when I am 65 I will only wrestle with manuals in cars) , I will be following the truckers' threads here to learn what a 5+4 is.

:sSig_thanks:

Most confusing truck was a I H cabover with both splitter valves where hose clamped to the shifter low /high was in front and the direct/overdrive was on the side never did get comfortable with that truck.
BTW there is a low gear on the 13 SPD that you normally don't use.
A 13 SPD is the best trans you can have IMHO.

ok..so 13 FORWARD gears, plus reverse.

video showed guy starting in Neutral, then four shifts, then 5, 6, 7 and 8 all with L/H settings with the switch. that's how I got 12 forward gears, plus one not shown then.

yes, i will leave the IH's et. all to the professionals .. i just wanna drive a bus again, this time for fun. I drove buses in college part-time, no shifting gears of course.

Hardest things to learn were (1) no "snout" to help you position yourself in a lane, and (2) turning wheels are behind you physically so you found yourself hanging over the curb on turns when of course the turning wheels were fine.

then, to show off, a veteran, full-time, non-student driver showed me how to parallel park a bus. that move drew applause from the passengers

I never used the clutch. Except the years they rammed Macks down our throats with the MaxiTorque 5 speeds. 5 years of driving misery... Hated them.

Amen.

Hey Blubbs what are those like to ride in. I keep threatening to go somewhere on the Mega buses they have here and ride on the top.

I also have to add that the 2.1M prevost is nicer than my house.
Hey dave ,There so amazing I used to sit at the front on ,The top level and you could see everything it had the entrance at the back but there was no door ,Just a pole you grabbed then jumped on ,At the bottom there was a giant mirror so you could see if there wher ,Any empty seats upstairs I wish those days ,Where back but ,There long gone now ,Il look up the stats of the bus for you And post them

Clutchless shift ,Dave some times I do it on my cars and bikes doesent do them any harm ,As long as you match the Revs ,That's the term in the UK "

That would be my luck. I'm not real fond of people in general so riding a bus with a bunch of strangers for hours does not sound like much fun.

Secretly, I have wanted to get and restore a SceniCruiser (PD4501) for a long time. I don't know why a big bus is so cool, but it is. Of course, my wife runs screaming for the exit whenever I talk about it.

Amazingblue. That waz ah typo on the 12V9 thing. my pecker finger hit the (2) and I never looked back to see if it waz there and didn't proof the post. Sorry 'bout that. Az for that 12 cylinder "Horse" Two slight problemz in todayz world however. 1st waz that at .25 per gallon and 2 1/2 to 3 MPG it were no problem BUT me thinkest those dayz are behind us. 2nd waz like all two cycle Detroit's they marked their territory VERY WELL, almost to the point of leaving ah trail. You could alwayz tell where a Detroit powered tractor had set ah spell in ah truck stop or customerz lot by the size of the black spot on the ground! The hep driverz out there back then alwayz carried ah few extra gallons of Rotella and would and did (after an oil change) fire up and let it idle, pull the dip stick and with a 3 cornered file put a 2nd mark on the stick where the oil level showed when it waz running. After that winter or summer you could pull the stick and know if you needed to add without even shutting down and 'specially in the cold monthz there were weekz on end where you never did shut down, but that'z another story. And az for top speed, their are a few variables that play into that too. Transmissions, rear gear ratios, and in the bygone dayz the size of the "button" in the governor and today the complexities of the electronics can still be tweaked. everything waz and still iz a trade off tho' but the easy answer iz that $ solvez most all problems. OH, And if you're serious I'd chose and Allison automatic transmission for you application regardless of which horse you chose to move your new home with. Your total weight will still be less then Half the gross weight limits. Why would you wanna spend time building your right arm and left leg muscle? And ah little FYI that I'm aware of only 'cuz I waz out there then. Their waz and probably still iz ah meat haulin' outfit domiciled in San Antonio with an old Diamond-T with a 12V92 between the railz that I think had ah 2 stick spicer 20 spd. behind it and I never heard how the twin screw waz geared. That the last time they turned it loose on east bound I-10 grossed out at 72,380 which waz the legal max back then, the driver got just about to Orange(not far from the Louisiana line) when he ran up an ah road block. They estimated hiz speed at ah bit north of 128 1/2. The company had to have it towed and then loaded on a rail car to get it home and az the story that surfaced waz told that if it ever left their property again it would be another fine more then the speeding ticket waz this time, then confiscated and destroyed. That waz in 1978 if my memory bankz are still workin'. Jer....Sorry for the book

Jer...thanks for the "book" brother. Your time and thoroughness is appreciated. Ray

I'll try to do paragraphs next time. BTW Ray, My Bride and I relocated to Wilmington, N.C. last Halloween time and I won't bore yeah with that book az to why. I'm just too dam lazy to change the Avitar(And I like it). Jer

300rag turned me on to these Prevosts. Seen them on the road before but didn't know/pay attention to what they were.

I am in NO way gonna give up on my Scenicruiser project, but at under $400K (vs. the one for $2.1M) a nice used Prevost aint so bad either. I think I could spin America in this thing.

heck, maybe that $2.1M rig will be down here within a decade? and like bigbarneycars told me: "get hiz and herz", Scenicruiser for me, Prevost for her :D
