Chrysler-badged Fusie Cop Cars?

one of these threads, that didnt start as a cop car topic, has a couple A38 fusie fender tags/buildsheets.

my observations before that were same as yours .. L, M, or H second VIN digits, NO A38 but YES Y39 and often a second "special handling" tag.

Sanow and Bellah's book called out A38 with Plymouth starting in 1971 -- that started a big argument to my recollection in one of those threads I am recalling.

Another has about 15-20 "F" codes (spotlights, welds, wiring harness for roof lights, single keys, etc). where we chipped in and provided what we knew .. until someone chipped in with the mother lode.

i searched and didnt find any of these threads but they're out there. maybe someone else knows or can search better than me?
The tags I have are just Y39 and have 999 paint codes and a second tag with "SPECIAL ORDER" "SPECIAL PAINT"

Chryslers and Imperials of that era were built at, and only at, the Jefferson (C code) plant. C body Plymouths and Dodges were built at Belvedere (D), Newark (F), and, prior to 1970 (?), Windsor (R plant).

I had a 70 Sport Suburban buillt in Windsor.
Here is a Dodge, too

My 2 cents worth...

I've yet to see the A38 code on a Fusey cop cars Fender tag.....instead I have seen the Y39 Special order code and the K designation in the VIN, or the Y39 and M designation.

I personally think that the A38 was a 74+designation for the most part. Prior to that it was mostly Special order stuff if you didn't want the standard Police Package.

I've got the tags off a 73 Fury I Toronto Metro police cruiser. It is optioned very oddly.

Which of anyone has a full list of Molar fleet option codes, please PM me.

Nick

Ok great!. Medium price class, E86, A38, and Y39 .. in 1971. thanks for that!

Lines up with Sanow and Bellah's book that Plymouth had A38 in 1971. Somebody else here produced a 72 Polara with it -- A38 and a L price class.

all we gotta do is try to help ya find out how many U-Code Fury III's got built .. folks here are resourceful and hopefully can turn that up for ya.

Bill or Kevin could IF they wanted to take the time. Problem is, as soon as they offer up numbers for one a long line forms of guys wanting numbers looking for that one of one.

wasnt aware of that ... anyway, then its not an option :) thanks!

They both helped Fred and myself with numbers on the 70 convertible. It took years to obtain as Im sure theyre extremely busy and every guy out there needs to know.

FWIW...I've seen A38 on a 71 Dodge tag.

yes i am sure that's true. thanks!

to my knowledge, no one has reported/posted evidence of A38 prior to 1971 on any C-body fusie here on this forum but there's no way to know for sure.

We have seen Dodge and Plymouth A38's in 1971 and 1972 on Plymouth and Dodge fuselage cars.

Waiting on that elusive A38 on 71-73 Chrysler-badged fusie .., OR a K in second position on VIN that would be indicative of a police car.

My 1972 NJ State Police Fury III, unmarked car. H in VIN, U code, E86, several F codes, and Y39 -- No A38

I'm pretty sure A38 would've been on the build sheet, just not on the fender tag, from what i gather. Also i believe '71 was the last year that the fuseys had the A38 code on the fender tag.
I could be wrong but this is all what I've learned from my research.

we are all just contributing what we know .. or in some cases can prove. No "fights" yet either :)

my 72 polara had A38 on buildsheet but not on fender tag. but i can no longer "prove" that with documents.

the buildsheet for my '72 NJSP Fury III no longer exists unfortunately .. the car may never have left the factory with it. Its got cool hidden headlights tho :)

thx!

My thoughts on the WVSP car are that a fleet was ordered under contract through WV DGS Purchasing Division Business
West Virginia Purchasing Division
I worked for the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections for about 5 years supporting IT for the institution I worked at and a couple others to cover when people were on vaca. I still have close friends in the system.
I also have a friend who is a retired PSP corporal. He joined PSP in the early 70's and although PA's state police force was and is larger than WV, state police departments could special order cruisers with whatever they wanted. I know for a fact that PSP ordered a specific cam in the 440's in the late 60's and I believe that practice continued into the early 70's. Michigan and CHP also custom ordered to this detail.
My sister lives in WV and WVSP still use the same paint scheme that appears to be used since the mid 50's blue with a gold top. Thanks to Amazinblue for the website but it looks like WV has a long history of using Chryslers for State Police cruisers.

I believe the 73 Chrysler is a police pkg car ordered as a fleet by WVSP but I'm only guessing based on the pics below and the comments above.

These Fleet codes look to have been GENERALLY used from late 1960's to 1980.

I know its not complete .. for example, I have an "F42" code on my 72 Fury .. dunno what that is.

As such, I would not call it "authoritative", but can give guidance.

Anybody have "F" codes to add? Refute with evidence? Please post :)

I am not vouching for the accuracy/completeness of this content. You should use sources you trust if not this one.
