What to do?

Yup, exactly what I did......well I've done a bit more, but the cam is the heart of the deal (carburetor is obviously important too...not getting to 335hp with your 2bbl) your on the right track....also exhaust...need good dual exhaust system

what to do?
Throw the engine back into the 71 Fury and sell the car running.

A 71 383 2bbl is a low comp engine with no real fun. Built something that has power to go

In case you don't know, max HP only comes at high rpm with the engine screaming. Most people don't drive that way. That would be in 2nd gear on the highway at 60 mph. What most people want is torque, like a Harley blubbing along in high gear and you turn the throttle and torque your way out. A 2 bbl is fine for low-end torque, which is why most cars came that way. Some people put in a high-lift, high overlap cam mainly for the "race car" sound with poor idle (rough, missing w/ cloud of noxious unburnt gases out the tailpipe). If so, buy a mega-Thumper cam or such and bother the neighbors.

Here we go again making a mole hill into a mountain here...you don't need a big lumpy cam, and certainly don't need high compression for what your trying to do....335hp is in no way unreasonable to get from your 71' 383 with a few relatively inexpensive and wisely chosen parts...... NYB makes good suggestion with the Hughs Whiplash cam, I was looking at those at first for a time.........gives you your "big cam" choppy idle effect but you still get to keep your pwr brakes...for most applications. Don't sweat it your good with your 71'...use the "kiss" theory and you can't go wrong.

im really glad i started this post , i like the sound of the hughs whiplash cam.i really just want a nice car to drive not a race car.however i want it to have 383 magnum hp.

If you want a 383 magnum you need to change the pistons. Compression is low on 383-2 engines

"Magnum" is a name. Think he's more concerned about the hp. Don't see why he has to change pistons. Rather expensive choice to only get 50 hp increase, give or take a few hp?

Not disputing that. Just saying pulling the heads and everything else to do it is drastic than has to be 8, 5:1 or no. Right about now he's probably saying "YIKES"!!

Well, if he's changing the cam...........all that is left is the head bolts. Put a set of 915 closed chamber heads on her and gain a full point in compression.

The Mopar Performance 440/383 restoration cam is a good choice. Adding a 400 spread bore intake, and Thermoquad, with duals will really wake up that 383 and still be very mildly manured.

Later on maybe add a pair of H.P. manifolds.

There ya go. Speaking for myself only, I'm not made out of money so when I buy or do stuff I'm looking to do it as cheap as possible....if that's possible. Sounds like blittle0825 was thinking along those lines also.....unless I missed it. If so, ya want easy and fast 50+ hp?? Dial Jegs, they'll deliver a crate motor to your door by tomorrow 5pm.
