Hello, looking for some help here. I have a 69 fury that has been a 10 year project. I just had an upholstery shop install a new top for me. My problem is the top will not drop into the well completely. It sticks up about 6 inches above the rear seat and deck making it impossible to put boot on. Any help?

Any pics? Do you have the body portion of the factory service manual? Nothing in the trunk beneath the top well, right? (Had to ask)

Nothing under it. It appears that the canvas is too tight at the rear corners to allow the top to lower any further. I will take some pics when I get home. The installer told me the window needs to be unzipped first. I am going to try that, but I didn't think I would need to unzip the window everytime I lower the top.

Nope, no need to unzip it. Something else is wrong.

:welcome:........ You came to the right place.

It should have a glass window and does not need to be unzipped. If there were something interfering with the top well the glass would pop. Sounds like something with the installation. Where did you get your top.....?
We need pictures.........!

The top is a Kee top. I purchased from the convertible top guys with the intention of installing it myself. After a little consideration I decided to go to a professional. The closest shop was price's upholstery in Inwood WV. They charged me $800 for labor and tack strips. I just want it to work properly.

Your top defiantly is not folding correctly. Everything looks right when in the up position. Does it latch to the header OK ....? The arms should drop down into the well at the sides. Did you try to cycle the top before having the cover installed ....? If it worked then there is an issue with the installation.
I'm thinking your initial assessment is a good one.

Yes, latches tight at header. Mechanism worked fine poor, but was missing 70% of the old top. I tried unzipping the window and that didn't help.

My '70 vert should be near if not identical to your '69 so I cycled my top and took some pictures. The top is probably a little stiff since it hasn't moved since last October.

Here is the top with the roof latches released.

I have a glass window, but it shouldn't make any difference. I used the top dash switch to raise the top to the vertical balance point so you can see how the folds start forming.

Note the top folds shown above look pretty crappy, but it all works out in the end. I just jogged the dash down switch to get the top just past the balance point and then let gravity do it's thing. The top came to rest sticking up about 5 or 6 inches as the next photo shows. Remember, your top may not fall as far or that fast because it doesn't have the weight of a glass window to haul it down.

Normally I run the power pump long enough to "suck" it down, but for this demo I just left it for few minutes and gravity slowly finished the job. All the way down looks like the following.

Hopefully some of this helps.

Your roof guy's suggestion to unzip the window is a crock, never done that on any vert I've owned, well that's a lie, I did it once to see how it worked and had a ***** of a time getting the zipper closed again.

I would wait for a hot day and put the car in the sun to really warm up the top, then use the dash switch to power the top down and keep your finger on the button until the pump can't move it any further.

A tip avoid raising or lowering the top when its cold, the material just gets too stiff. If you've run around all day with the top down and try to raise it that evening long after the sun has gone down you'll have a battle to get the latches locked.

Hope some of this helps.

Thanks, it has actually been unseasonably cool this week. I did suspect heat will make it more pliable. I called the roof guy and sent some photos. It sounds like he is willing to work with me, if there is a problem. Your car looks very nice, I love the 70 grill and hood.

A few things I would like to address or mention...

Simple lubrication of all metal moving parts as well as cables.
Also do you have and air pockets in your hydraulic and or did you ever bleed them or check the fluid level ?

It is possible that the pump is on it's way out and or one or even both hydraulic pistons may have a leaking or bad seal. (just a thought)

I have had a 69 sport fury vert since 1976 and have gone thru a boatload of various issues throughout the years and remember once replacing both pistons and the pump many many years ago (in the mid 80's) Try a few of these site that I pasted below maybe they may guide you into the right direction with some insight and answers.

Even without the pump running you should be able to just push the top into the well. Most of mine, (I have four convertibles), will gravity drop into place.

Thank you for the links. The pump sounds good and lifts and lowers the top well. When it is lowered as far as the pump will lower it. I try to push it by hand the rest of the way down. The will push down a little further but springs back up. I am hoping to try it on a hot sunny day and see if it helps.
