This is for those of you who live in NJ and submit their daily driver, if you have one, to the draconian NJ motor vehicle inspection process.

Ever had any problems passing the inspection for emissions testing? I've failed twice (2nd time was half hour ago) now for excessive CO%,......the reading on my car is at 8.90 and the standard for all cars is 7.00. I've leaned it out previously after the first failure so it SOUNDS to me like the carb is still running a little bit too rich and I'll need to lean it out even further. Part of this is that I'd like to hear other stories, if any, and how you got it straight and Part of this is just me ranting as the "professional" attendants were not very "professional" in the manner of handling my car, WHICH really pissed me off.:rant5::rant5::rant5::rant5::

I know this isn't going to help you with your E-check. Does the People's Repubic of New Jersey offer historic tags for the mighty old Mopar's?

Yeah, a socialist utopia we are.
I think the state does offer historic tags....but it is my understanding to get historic tags you'll also need to secure classic / antique type auto insurance, and does that not stipulate how many miles said vehicle can be driven? Mine's a daily driver all year long.

Listen, no one is watching how many miles you drive. O.K.... so you get historic tags, $75.00 for a lifetime. Antique insurance is minimal, depending on the value of the car, Yours maybe $ 120.00 a year. The insurance company does not care how much you drive it although the state doesnt want you to drive it other than for "educational purposes".

I dont take my cars to the inspection station, especially the Deptford station. I also have witnessed tragedy in Cherry Hill. I take my daily's to a local shop, pay $80.00 and I am on my way. Its way worth the expense instead of the harassment.

I hear you loud and clear, my only worry with that is some dope head runs into me again like last year at a WaWa and the Ins. Co. won't cover damages b/c I wasn't driving to a car show or some related event. I know you say they don't check, but have you (or anyone else) ever had to put in a claim?
Nonetheless I'm gonna check it this time, I'm so sick and tired of the inspection process. So it sounds like you are acquainted with the Deptford inspection station.....bunch of lobotomized a--holes there.

12 years ago I went to the Deptford station with my newly purchased 1997 conversion van. Once inside they did the normal stuff then they popped the hood ( I had to stand behind the ropes) When I asked why are they looking under the hood they said to see if it is the original engine and to see if anything had been modified. At the same time some big fatso chick with bracelets on her fingers is caressing the side of my van. I ask WTF and her response was to see if the body panels were replaced........................................Huh? I jumped the rope and she got in my van and wouldnt get out. All I wanted to do was leave, I'll take it somewhere else. She wouldnt get out and a small mob gathered around me, the police showed up......the officer said get out of the mans van and let hime leave. Thats the abridged version.......................I vowed never to return. I broke that vow on March 31st and regret it.

Cherry hill....... I was there in my brown 71 about the same 12 years ago. The car went through and failed, I forget for what. They had a motor home in the entrance while I was at the exit. I was outside the car with the hood up talking with the guy with the stickers. They dropped that motor home off the front end machine and popped the tires ......I aint going back there either

In Maryland, as long as the car has mimimal coverage you are good to go. Police won't bother you unless you are being a nuisance. No one cares about the mileage. I drive mine every day... except when it's raining - 78 wiper cam problem.

I've heard about that later c body wiper issue---sounds like it can be a real nuisance...I once had a Plymouth with the same problem.

I'm going to look into this, there are a couple classic car insurers operating here in NJ. I just need to know what they will grill me on if I were involved in a major kerfuffle. Why would they offer "classic" type insurance...with reduced premiums over reg insurance I assume, if they did not care about the mileage?? I'm not questioning anybody's words, but on the flip side there's no such thing as a free lunch either, esp. coming from an insurance company.

A friend of mine has a 87 Camaro with Maryland historic tags on it. He has Geico collector car insurance. $119 a year and it covers the replacement cost ($3000) that he agreed with Geico that the car was worth. Car has to be parked in a garage. Only thing they asked for was pictures of the car and the garage. Didn't ask for odometer reading, didn't ask if there was any modifications, didn't ask for estimated annual mileage, asked really nothing.

I think that I can fix it with parts help from NEWP. Using a 77 3 speed motor and the drive link. Hopefully it'll work.

I can only drive on rain free forecasted days. I drove it to work today. Yea!

That's encouraging....didn't know Geico has classic insurance too.

Well than I hope you can fix your ride up with the 77' pieces so you can enjoy it everyday! Need those wipers, esp. now since spring/summer is coming along with rains more frequently. I go through withdrawal symptoms when I have to put into dry dock...gets worse day by day.

Hi.
One of my good mates had a 1965 AP6 Valiant had a frontend hit.
he had classic insurance had payed it for years.
after the been hit frist thing they asked was how many mile had it got on the clock.
as classic insurance here only will let you drive it for 5000km per year.
has car sat in my shed for a few year while he and the insurance group work out what was going to happen.

Hello Airstream. Wow, the front end is totally smooshed in by about half. THAT 's EXACTLY what I'd want to avoid over here. Hopefully noone was hurt in that, looks pretty bad.

Their outlook is most car people take extra care of their cars. They are garaged and the likelihood of them getting stolen is lighter because of it. They also figure your not driving it in everyday work traffic. I do believe Condon and Skelly have lifted their mileage limit.

Wipre cam!!!

Being the owner of 78 Newport, that wiper cam problem is impossible to fix with the correct part, (3799442) since it is NLA and I mean, NLA. Find a junked 74 to 77 NYB or Newport with 2-speed delay wipers with all the pieces. I found one for $11.00 dollars. Take your old one off throw it away and the older version will bolt right up to the wiper motor and then clip it into the main wiper shaft arm. Make sure you install it correctly or if not, your wiper arms will go down instead of up. Don't waste your time looking for the bits & pieces for your old system. It was a one year only (78) design and was crap. You will see the design diffrence in the old system & it is much better. Jim

Yes, a 2 speed motor and drive link. Thanks. Is that what you ended up doing with your 78 Newport? Thanks again Jim.
