DIY Plating

[SPF Required]

Anyone on here attempted chrome plating small parts at home? There are some pretty affordable starter kits out there and lots of You Tube videos. Just curious if anyone here has tried it before I jump in.

Some of the items I might try….

Rear view mirror mount and arm
Door handles
Convertible top latch receivers

Caswell has a forum. https://forum.caswellplating.com/ (If you haven't already found it). I've bought buffing stuff from them, but nothing else.

You are dealing with some chemicals' that may be really hard to get rid of legally, especially in California.

I zinc plate only because none of the chemicals used are toxic at all.

The caswell stainless steel blackener is useless. The copper and Nickel "wand" stuff works okay for small parts (i plated a 1911 with it). I also used some of the gold plating, which worked really well, again on a 1911...

Edit: i have to say that the prep of the workpiece is what makes or breaks it. You need to chemically degrease, and probably also do a acid or electro ceaning
