As long as manifold is a late model it can be left alone. Only reason I don't like coming off the ballast side is, it draws a lot more amps through the ignition switch. Both are rather large amp draws. Coil is a large amp draws because only thing slowing the current is the huge number of windings, heating element in choke thermostat is same way a coil that causes resistance and gets hot relaxing the bimetallic spring. It's just a lot of amp load on a circuit that if it fails your walking.
If you want to use switched power from ballast I would power a relay with it. There are a ton of key switched circuits in the lean burn system, get a test light and source one of those.
