This photo is believed to have been taken on 6 November 1970, as USS “Kitty Hawk” (CVA-63), with Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 11 embarked, departed North Island, San Diego, California, on her 5th Vietnam War Cruise (6 November 1970–17 July 1971). USS “Ticonderoga” (CVS-14) is astern of “Kitty Hawk.”

This week we are spotlighting some images from the collection of ADM Roy L. Johnson, a native of Eunice, Louisiana, who rose to the position of Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet. During World War II he served as an air group commander and then executive officer on board USS Hornet (CV 12), pictured here in port.

Quite a few follow from this source: Could sailor on deck survive BLAST-wave of WW2 big gun? (12 HQ Photos)

They tell a story of sorts, and i believe only a few shots are already here. Study the detail of photos if you have time .. seems to me you need to get behind and gun barrel openings on the perpendicular axis. Anywhere in front for several yards, the blast wave could hurt you or worse.
