Meet Regina FQ3, a 1970 Polara convertible who turns 51 today

A few of the original plastics were broken, but luckily in my stash, I had a set that needed to be dyed black. I cleaned them up, and hit them with a couple coats of SEM.

I also noticed the high beam dimmer switch plug had gotten a little warm once before. I pushed the wires out and replaced the plug with one from my stash.

I figured now would be a good time to remove the grille to change out the headlights with all new Wagners...

I am awaiting a new circuit board, VIN rivets, cluster bulbs, and a new dimmer switch. Once I have that stuff I can finish assembling the dashboard.

Stay tuned for more updates.
How did you perforate the holes for the speakers in the new dash?

@71Polara383 ...Wyatt , what was wrong with that circuit board ?
Just looked at mine....(69 polara 500) and saw they allready worked on it , the connector with the 9 bras pins are now bras screws........i read that before here at the forum but can,t find it anymore....

I can (start) the engine with a screwdriver ( startrelais )...but nothing works , no dash lights lights , ingnition lock.....all dead!
I know the last owner worked on it , a resto plus put new speakers in the dash plus newer radio but after that it never run again!!!!

Any idea ?

Wyatt excellent breakdown on the dashboard refurbishment. Great info on how to install the front speakers and dash trim. A real well though through dash build. Wyatt @ wwwtheelectricaldepot.com is an excellent source wiring connectors and Packard 440 wiring terminals which our vintage Mopars use. Prices are reasonable too.

The dashpad was sourced in my quest for NOS polara stuff. A guy had it for a project that no longer exists and decided it was time to move it along. He claimed it to be the very first pad for a 70 Polara done by Just Dashes. The outer speakers are just grilles that screw in from the back side.

One of the pins on Regina's dashboard cluster circuit board was broken:

On the recommendation of @71Polara383 I bought a reproduction board from Mopar9999 on eBay that is "produced by Mr. Heaterbox and Interior (and) uses soldered connector pins ":

(Note: I also found another replacement part at another vendor on the web, that was more expensive:

)

(CAREFUL, 1969 owners! The 1970 board is different from the 1969 one, which does not have the three slots for the voltage limiter -- however, the eBay seller lists the same P/N 2984922 for both:

I also had to replace a heater temp control cable clip that mounts on the control valve (P/N 3431457). Wyatt found it on eBay too but not elsewhere:

@Devinism is providing a correct replacement, rebuilt to his high standards.

Time for an update!!!

The circuit board for the cluster and the rebuilt dimmer showed up and it was time to finish everything up.

I verified side by side the circuit board is the same. Very very nice quality part.

Then I had noticed some of the light sockets were busted...checked my stash and I had replacements on hand.

After getting the new bulbs/sockets handled. I flipped the cluster over and decided I would give it a wet sand and a buff. It was very scratched up. Unfortunately I don't think I too a photo of the cluster alone after polishing...but it is absolutely crystal clear now.

Before...yuck

It was at this point where I reinstalled the cluster into the dash after I did some basic bench testing to make sure all lights were working prior to installation.

Loading up the switch panel with the new dimmer.

Let's roll this whole cart over to the car so I have less to carry.

With the help of one of the guys that I share the shop with, we walked the dash into the car...

And we rolled it up into position, I started connecting the bulkhead/wiring/re installing the column ETC

Every. Single. Courtesy light bulb was blown. The console. The rear armrests. Everything.

MUCH BETTER!

Here's a few shots of the illumination of the cluster...

I waited for some parts to arrive from a member and unfortunately the middle shelf/pad wasn't much better than what we had...I dug and found one that I then needed to dye, it went into the car and the dash swap was COMPLETE.

It was time for some exercise! Finally!

I drove her south to Castle Rock State Park with my girlfriend. When we were parking, I noticed how incredibly stable the ALT gauge was...it wasn't charging. I looked under the hood and checked for any loose connections. Nope. Oh well. Cross my fingers and hope we make it back without issue. And we did. Mostly.

It starting to get dark, we were almost to byron on RT2 and the lights flickered. Only once. North of Byron RT2 is a curvy dark winding road. Not the road you want headlight issues on in the dark...and she started giving me issues. I at this point diagnosed it to be the floor dimmer switch crapping out. After a few flickers and about 1 mile in almost darkness...I put my left foot on the dimmer and held it...seemed to work. We were only a few minutes from the shop now anyway.
I get her in and parked. Shut her off. Go to restart...completely dead. Pulled the battery out and put it on the trickle charger and walked away for a few days...

Knowing the alternator had been rebuilt...my eyes were on the original looking voltage regulator...sure enough we had a resto style replacement on hand, easy swap and we were charging properly again!

Moving underneath the car...

I already rebuilt the entire suspension the last thing I didn't yet change was the rear shocks...2 KYBs installed...

I also took this moment to look at the exhaust shops work. Very happy overall. I decided I didn't like how loose the oem hanger was on the passenger side. So I got an NOS one Michel had grabbed a while back and installed.

As usual we like to upgrade to the poly trans mounts.

Also the steering box had some leaks I wasn't a fan of... and since we had a rebuilt box on hand...it was time to swap em out.

Now she drives/steers amazing. I have one more bug I need to solve. Got a humming from the rear axle. We haven't done U joints yet, I see the pumpkin is weeping a bit of diff fluid, I checked the fluid and it's golden and still full. That leads me to believe that the axle bearings themselves are likely the cause of my humming.

One last thing I forgot about until I was going over my notes this afternoon.

After sprucing the interior up the black pads on the pedals were really bothering me. I cleaned them up throughly...not yet satisfied. I went to my stash yet again and found a nice pedal dress up kit.

Thats much better.

Stay tuned. Couple more things we are going to do before she heads into service...

Alright! That's it! I'm upping my standard FCBO offer to $3500.
