I have a 64 New Yorker Salon. Finaly back under it's own power. Took it for a test drive and seemed fine for the first few miles. Once heated up the speed would go down fro 60 to 30 with the gas pedal still to the floor. Is the tranmission toast, or the torque converter? Or will adjust the bands have any effect?

Did you check the trans fluid level with the engine idling in neutral? It has to be checked that way.

What does the current atf look and SMELL like? That would be a determineer of friction damage.

As to the speed change, it could be a valve body issue. Like the "R" and "D" frictions are trying to apply at the same time. Which is how a trans-brake for drag strip staging is orchestrated.

Drained and refilled transmission with new filter. Fluid checked in neutral and hot. Almost didn't get off the road as the speed went down to 30 with it floored. Recovers somewhat when you stop and start up again but then the speed drops off quickly. Engine revs just fine.

Does the new filter have 2 holes for fluid pickup? Or did you use a newer filter with one hole? Look up the part number filter you bought.

If it really is the trans slipping and you had it floored to go 30 mph then It's very likely smoked now.

^^^^

If you ever think the trans is slipping get off the gas or you will most likely toast the trans.

Most of the time when it will move cold and start slipping when warm your clutches are going out. If it does the opposite sluggish cold and normal when warm then that could be the filter is plugging up.

I grew up on a farm and years ago my grand dad had a 65 Imperial that started slipping when warm and I told him it would need the trans rebuilt. He agreed but didn’t have the time to get to it for a month or two but still needed the car. He drained the fluid, including the TC, changed the filter and filled it with tractor hy-tran hydraulic fluid that is a thicker fluid but very little detergent. Drove it for a few more months then had it rebuilt. It sure did smell bad when we tore it down.

Filter only has the one big hole. Three holes to bolt it on. So, I take it that there isn't any point in adjusting bands or anything else? I need to find someone to rebuild it then. I can imagine how costly that will be!!!

It will be about a grand, with an honest shop. Worth doing. I had our 1966 TF727 rebuilt, saw the old clutches, nothing but metal left on them.
The tranny mechanics were flabbergasted that the car moved at all! I told them 'twas Lucas, Type F fluid and the Good Lord. Still driving that tranny now. though this will be its LAST rebuild. The pump cavity is worn over-large, and I HAVE 2 more 727s, both newer and in much better condition anyway. Since this one has begun leaking again, I'm apt to just put the '68 tranny on soon. That one didn't lose a drop the couple months I ran it.

Yes should be about a grand if you pull it out. If you were closer I would give you a good deal.

I was afraid you would all say a grand. Probably worth it as my Salon which came with almost all options as standard also has the few options available. It has the tilt wheel, posi and leather interior. The worlds most complete car for sure!

Mith need a good road trip. Have friends in Rochester and family in Wisconsin. Maybe a good excuse to enjoy some other scenery.

Hay if you want to plan a road trip I would be happy to do it. I have done same day jobs for a couple of other members on here.

Where in Minnesota are you? What would the estimated price be?
Also have an issue with the parking pawl ( as I call it), correct term is the sprag. I think it is broken. Have you fixed those before?

I’m actually in southern Michigan. I have fixed everything in a 727.
