Would this save NASCAR

Assuming it needs saving. NASCAR continues to say everything is ok but with the recent announcement of 29 thousand seats being removed from the Dover, Delaware track I’m convinced it’s not. So after seeing drawings of these older muscle cars I collected a few & I wondered if NASCAR would return to its roots & allow teams to race any mid size to larger American body they wanted similar to the cars pictured here from 1960 to 1979 would that reenergize the sport & bring the fans back. Having been to the Hendrick Motorsports shop several times & watched them fab up Lumina & Monte bodies it would be no more expensive or difficult for them to fab one of these. Still use modern chassis/suspension/drivetrain as well as safety gear. Just skin it with these bodies. Eliminate wind tunnel testing or else we will end up right back with what we have now. Absolutely no AERO cars. Put the challenge of making the cars work back in to the mechanics & teams hands not a lab engineer at Lockheed Aerospace. There are no wrong answeres just opinions as we know NASCAR would never do this but it would be cool to see a 69 Charger trying to hit 190.

Nascar is a victim of its own stupidity. Arcane rules make it all but impossible for some makes and body styles to compete, that is a detriment to the sport and attendance has suffered. Who wants to watch a bunch of cars that bear no resemblance to actual production vehicles race anyway?

I like the concept of "run whatcha brung" using mid sized cars from the years Bob mentioned, (maybe different years allowed for the different series, Cup vs infinity for example).Take the AERO crap out of the sport and get rid of the templates etc. Put a cubic inch limit on the cars but don't limit the mods. Keep the safety, but don't kill the cars.

its away from the cars we can buy and drive , in the beginning it was not just a dream , but you could have the package that was winning the events . its just to far way from that . only guys with millions can own those cars . 'well thats racin' bucks always wins , right .

Make it mandatory the engines must be derived from what is available at the dealer. Return the stock to stock cars. Dump the downforce.

Cars used to be stock bodies. Starting in the mid '60's Nascar started allowing tubular frames for added safety. This gradually transitioned to full custom frames and bodies by the late '70's.

have you ever tried buying any nascar spec parts today . if your not a name , your money ate good enough . we can buy old stuff all day long . but current parts . forget it . and thats why its failing . we could have bought old nascar engines with at least one 500 mile race on them back a few years ago . but we could not even buy a stop in line for one of the new issue one . there was a time when a small person could go race with the big three , but no more . i just glad all racing as not gone that way . but speaking of person racers , watch the south east gassers . everything is tobe 67 or earlier , well the engines are newer stuff but made over to have that older look , straight axles 4spds n wheels up leaves .

Things like the segment cautions really don't help NASCAR much. But it does keep the cars in a closer pack. We all like close racing.
The first thing that started the downfall was when NASCAR abandoned it's fan base in the south east, built cookie cutter tracks in places where there were few REAL race fans and robbed dates from great traditional tracks.
Next came the Toyota....... What a sham. ALL about the money. Dodge, the most performance oriented American car, is not even in the running. Somebody dropped the ball there.
As for the cars being so generic, one word. SAFETY! If all the cars are constructed the same then all drivers are equally safe. I, for one, never like to see anyone get hurt. I have friends out there.
Another factor for the spec car is controlling cost. A single sponsor team just can't compete against the big, multi car, multi sponsor teams. Example...... Kurt Bush with team Denver Furniture, A single car team, can now run with the best of the Hendrick teams. A level playing field will maintain a full race field.

There are many facets to the sport of racing. There's the racers, the race fans, and the business/industry. NASCAR is still struggling but the recent Darlington race, (one of the two best tracks IMHO), was a sellout. That hasen't happened in a long time.

still can. You just gotta dig a bit. And there's warehouses full of used parts cheap.

The prices in the ebay search are exspendy. But if you know what you're looking for by name rather than a generic search, prices are very reasonable.

To see the old school type of racing go to your local small dirt track to watch street stock or economy stock.
Also Endurance racing is fun too.
Then there are the Lemons races where there is a spending limit (500.00) on whatever you bring to race provided it has the require safety equipment and pass tech inspection.

we had a speedway like that. The folks that moved in from Long Island and California got it shut down. Now it’s a dog park/open air drug market.
