Within a decade, age 65 arrives at my door.

When I was 35, I decided that occasion would be marked with a major purchase and one year un-interrupted tour of the country. Then I figured I could get 10 years of usage before I was unable/unwilling to tool around in it anymore.

This is what I want.

Anybody own(ed) one? Know anybody who owns one? The perks? The pitfalls? Convert it? Buy one all done?

Thanks in advance to anyone for your thoughts.

Doing your own conversion gives you the coach you want. That would be my choice. The possibilities are almost endless.

That is a cool bus!

first saw the Uniroyal Tire from the Sky Deck of one of these in 1967. been hooked on them ever since....and this one just aint big enough (my Dad bought me a toy like this one in Chicago at the start of the last leg of our trip).:icon_lol:

As cool as "my" Scencruiser will be...one day...it wasn't first kid on the block. This 1937 Kenworth was two decades earlier.

another neat one it seems. they only made 1,000 of these Scenicruisers...can't be too many left, converted or not.

Never seen that Kenworth before today brother...but will be on the lookout. I found a source that said the '37 Kenworth used an "under-floor layout engine, probably a Hall-Scott".

Dunno what that means and dunno what a 12V9 is? I assume you're talking about a diesel/tranny combo?

Scenicruiser specs:

  • Length: 40 feet (12.19 m)
  • Width: 96 inches (2,438 mm)
  • Height: 131 inches (3,327 mm)
  • Wheelbase: 261 inches (6,629 mm)
  • Turn radius: 45 feet (13.72 m)
  • Powerplant:
    • 1954: 2x GM Diesel 4-71 engine
    • 1961 repowering: 1x Detroit Diesel 8V-71 engine
  • Transmission: manual, Spicer, 3-speed with 2-speed splitter originally (6 speeds altogether), 4-speed after repowering
  • Fuel Tank: 180 US gallons (150 imp gal; 680 L).
  • Seats: 10 on lower level, 33 on upper level. Total 43 seats
  • Luggage: 344 cu ft (9.7 m[SUP]3[/SUP]).
  • Aisle width: 14 inches (356 mm)
  • Front door width: 26 inches (660 mm)

Apparently I am supposed to seek the retrofit (1961 and later, done by Marmon-Herrington) Scenicruiser models with the single Detroit Diesel 8V71 8 cylinder mills instead of the two 4-71 four cylinder diesel-powered models.

We kicked around the Vista Cruiser in another thread last year. Anecdotally the design features of the cars had something to do with the Scenicruiser that GMC Division built?

I have NO idea if that is even true at all so I am not the source of that info...but car always reminded me of the bus, and vice versa, with that one design feature in their roofs.

I like them both:eek:

The very first Scenicruiser. 1949 GX-2. According to the poster, this describes the video

The 1949 GX-2 was 40′ long, and almost all states had still had that 35′ maximum length restriction. Greyhound used the GX-2 to lobby for increasing that limit, a process that took several years. The film in this video was shot by the Oregon State Police, the GX-2 presumably showing off its maneuverability as part of that process that took several years
