1966 Polara 500 The Black Car

Wow, I feel lazy after seeing this thread. Only thing i have done on my 66 polara is buy an electric ignition kit for it.

Have not installed it yet but having it sitting on a table in the box means something ..... right :)

I have to get used to these C bodies again, I have had a serious case of A- body fever since the time I bought the polara.
I am messing with a 71 scamp these days :) but I am here on FCBO now
I can't wait to see that car getting some work done to it. But there is nothing wrong with A body fever, I need to catch a little of that myself. This car took all my time away from my Dart, it was slated for all the attention this year, until February. I still hope to get it going this year, but I'm halfway through the car season, and I don't have space to work in the winter, so I better get a move on.

But I really like this car, and I've been pretty patient dealing with it's quirks. More parts and it will be rocking in no time.

You could always sell the Dart and buy another Polara :poke::lol:

I already asked @Rainy Day Auto if she wanted to sell, that's how bad I've gotten these days. She said she wanted to get it going and see how it fit her, she's concerned she won't be able to see oit the window as she is 4' 8". (Don't worry Rainy, I had a gal at work who was 4' 10" sit in the gray car and she had no problem seeing out.)

The Dart will never be sold, if the Dart goes, everything goes. (See why I need to get it going?)

I am really thinking the polara will work out better than any other c body I have ever had.

Sometimes it's best to specialize in one type of car. I have had thoughts to trade the polara off for a nicely equipped dart or duster.

I traded my last c body which was a fusey for a 69 dart.

Or trade it :wideyed:

My Dart will need some work, front frame rail eventually, maybe some floor patches, the tail panel inside the trunk, maybe the quarters need attention. It a light blue car painted yellow, right over the blue. They might have scuffed the paint first, but not much. I have a 68 /6 k frame to swap in, 11 3/4" discs and pin type calipers. 15" Weld wheels with a spare set of rears with slicks, complete GT interior, grille and fender emblems, tailpanel and emblem, fiberglass hood with Hemi scoop, fenders, bumpers front and rear and a trunk lid. The only reason I haven't gone completely insane from starting to go down this stock route (cough, cough!) is that I have this Dart that is supposed to be my stress reliever playtoy that doesn't have to be practical. I want it streetable and able to drive a couple hours at a stretch. Since the Polara has stolen the two 440's I got for the Dart, it's getting a 413 I picked up last fall. Had a 727 for it already with the last 440 I got for it. 8 3/4" rear with 3.23's and Super Stock springs already installed last year or year before. Need to learn to weld so I can tack in my console brackets, convert to manual steering, and go have some fun with the damn car already! But in the meantime, all I can do is make vroom vroom noises. @65sporty

Hey Scott do you already have a welder? Tacking in some brackets is literally the type of job you could do while you're practicing.

I was hoping someone would catch that. A couple of tacks that no one will see, practice indeed.

No I don't have a welder. I'm thinking of getting a better 110 unit, I've been told many times it will do all I need by welders, and I don't have 220 out in the garage.

I have a 110 and it's enough for most automotive needs. I even installed subframe connectors in a 72 dart with no problems.

I have a Lincoln welder, for sure don't skimp on brand name for a welder.

Sounds pretty sweet.

So is it an original GT (LP23)

Sounds pretty sweet.
Thanks, I hope it turns out that way!

Nope, it's an LH23 Dart 270 originally that I got with a bad /6, piston sticking out the side of the block, and it knocked the starter off the transmission taking the mounting holes with it. From day one I didn't care what creative liberties I took with the car.

That is how they usually start out :)

Wire welding is easy, you can get a flux core wire machine pretty cheap now days. It will probably do all you need. A bigger MIG machine with solid wire and shielding gas is great but may be more than you need right now. Do some research before you make a purchase. 110v machines are great for sheet metal, 220v are usually too hot. We have a 110v and a 220v at work, the 110v for sheet metal, exhaust tubing, up to 1/4" material, but if it's getting in the 1/4" thickness range I just get the 220v machine out anyway.

What 65sporty said...

If you have a functioning 110v welder... try it on a spool of flux core wire... we have an accomplished member using a bottom of the heap flux core welder to produce fantastic results. My skills are low... so I'd play around a bunch before I took on a spot that would be visible. Making two chunks of steel hold together is another thing entirely... I can do that. To date, using the cheapest flux core available, my finest cosmetic work has been filling small screw holes in the heavy galvanized on the bus...

At the same time, I taught myself why sitting is a bad idea when doing the work... had an spark/ember jump over at me and burn through my pants and shorts... I bet the dance afterwards was fun to watch, as all I cared about was not letting it burn any additional holes in yours truly.

Yesterday I set out to get some 15" Slots for the gray car. I want 15" rims so I can get tires as 14" leaves me few options that I don't want. So I decided to take the 500. The car seemed to be running fine, and I checked the temp with my heat gun. @cantflip, yes they work best up against whatever, but it helped me track the heat,so.it worked fine, if not an absolute. Stopped in the bigger city down here, about 50 miles away. Worked my way up to where I was going, through farm country, just enjoying the ride. Even though the springs are shot, the car rode nice, better than the gray car. We will see how replacement springs affect that. Anyways, car started acting like it was hot, didn't want to stay running at a stop. After the third time of dying and restarting and going on my way, it died. Ok, dead battery, a dead new one at that. Ok, the alternator took a crap. It's all entirely my fault, I used what they had with the car, didn't check it out once, and put it in and away I went. Driving in town the little I do, it had no way of showing any symptoms really, so I didn't pay it any mind.

My biggest concern was, how the heck was I getting anywhere? Very surprised how many people drove right on by. As luck would have it, a nice looking 24 year old blonde sweetheart of a human gave me a lift the entire way to where I needed to go! One of the best conversations with a stranger i ever had, too. I thought I'd just ask a few questions to get to know her, and make the trip less weird just keeping silent during the forty-five minutes drive. We had a bunch in common, driving styles in particular, she's a leadfoot! In fact that was one of the first things out of her mouth, she was apologizing before she could prove it.

She dropped me off at a friend's house, who helped me get my wheels and tires and a battery from Wally world, and then drive me back to my car. We stopped and grabbed an alternator from another friend so I could try to get some current flowing to the battery. They stayed and helped me see in the dark (gotta love cell phones!) Swapped the parts out and as soon as it fired, I was turning around for home. The replacement alternator is ****, squealed for a few miles, them went quiet. I stopped for gas after fifteen miles, only to find out they didn't have the pay at the pump feature. Calculated my fuel level vs mile driven, should have enough, just erring on the side of caution. But there was steam coming from under the hood, it seems the belt for the alternator was slipping/stopping or slowing down my water pump pulley, I noticed my steering was harder to turn after the first few miles. Must have slowed it all down enough when it seized, the belt was laying about ten feet behind the car. I let it cool down and got out of there. Made it home fine and parked the car. Grabbed the truck and headed to Laura's work to let her know I was ok, went home and went to bed. Wondered if a 300 mile round trip was too much, after only going twenty miles round trip. I didn't care overall, I had the right people help me at the right time, some known, some unknown. It goes to show, there still are nice people out there, so thank you, Taylor! I couldn't have done it without you!

An excellent adventure... even with the drama...

I'm very relaxed with this car and how things are happening. The ride was nice, I'm very pleased so far. It needs work, but it's promising. I haven't even looked at the linkage, just checked it for slop.

Any pic's of the wheels you scored?
This is from the seller, cool Mopar guy, has a red '71 Hemi Challenger clone that gets driven. He and his buddies were selling their extras from their hoards. Anyone need an NOS Hemi dual point distributor for $1000? :wideyed:

I took the 14" rims and tires, pretty good set of BFG's as you can see. The 15x8" rims are what I was after. Drag radials are good for burnout tires. Got lug nuts and he threw in the caps from the Torque Thrusts he just put on a car (74 Vette). $200 for all of it. Took a month but I got them.
