engine removal 101 questions for the newbie - try not to die

That is the anchor for your column shifter. This one looks pretty good. the pivot bar end slides thru, and is anchored on the other side, the trans end stays free so the engine can move on the mounts and not change gear.
 
found a pic - bracket 19-48-46 and bushing 19-48-50

the one I have the bushing looks nylon/plastic and is cracked away

my other transmission doesn't have the bracket on there - that means my transmission guy took it off most likely when I carried him the transmission, as I do not recall doing it myself or I would have known what this part is from that experience

any idea of where to get these parts? junkyard only item? there has to be 6 gorrillion of them if they are on every 727

Hoffmans doesn't sell retail, so you'll have to find a distributor. I usually type the part number into eBay and even Amazon. Then I buy the best deal.
 
Thanks everyone for this string. Great info. I will be doing this on the Fury in the near future. Glad I did. Studying now before the big move. Like Saylor - I was like 16-17 since I did this with a bunch of guys in a field. Good stuff.
 
Its good to pore over lore as much as possible before making any major mechanical repair, but comes a time when naught but the Deed remains to be done. Once the engine has been assembled up to a "long block" its usually time to drop it in, then finish the job, unless it really is a thorough rebuild. THEN, having a good cradle to test run the thing before the Agony is worthwhile. Many problems can only be addressed easily while the motor is accessible.

I've built a cradle and have a stand, so hope to get a 400 built in the next 2 years, IFF I can free myself from nursery duty with my youngest spawn a bit....
