Once I learn how to operate my phone with the wrong hand. Speaking of that I have to do everything that way for awhile and that will be a challenge.

Mine is due to arthritis and it’s completely worn out.

That was exactly my situation (osteoarthritis due to injury and weightlifting, etc), and three years after total replacement, that shoulder is strong and flexible, great range of motion and pain free. PAIN FREE!

I planed ahead for using only one arm during the months of recovery. Small towel to dry off after a shower instead of that big old heavy fluffy thing, practiced brushing teeth and shaving with my left hand, cooking with left arm and so on. The idea is to NOT hurt the other shoulder in the meantime due to overuse or stupidity.

My PT was 6 months, and I worked and worked and worked at it. If you don't have tears in your eyes, you're not working on your range-of-motion exercises enough. Doctor's orders, doctor's orders, doctor's orders! Pretend each PT session is like D-Day.

Wear that sling for at least two months when you're outside your house. I wore that hated thing for three months to be on the safe side. You'd be amazed at the number of people who will jostle your or want to shake your hand or grab your shoulder and say hello. [Maybe not so much in the covid world]

The worst thing for me was that good Cabernet tasted like a vinegar and gasoline mix for two months. Food was fine, booze was fine, quality wine was disgusting.

Feel free to PM me after your surgery. We can exchange phone numbers and I can be your shoulder coach!

Good luck!

Best wishes with the surgery and prayers for a speedy recovery. Dont give the nurses a hard time,LOL!

Thanks for the words of encouragement and I might just take you up on the offer. I used to be one of those people who believed you could work through the pain and had to. At this time I can now tell you that isn’t the case. For me I have tried to keep my range of motion knowing this will help in the future but I now realize it’s not easy. Last week I had to stop taking my arthritis pills and I can honestly say they work. This change literally took me down several notches and it’s been tough. Going to be glad when it’s over.

It will be painful. Not the actual surgery. That's the easy part, actually. The PT is painful, but it's EVERYTHING to regaining full and wonderful use of your shoulder. Six months of PT, then six months of careful use. The long pole of the recovery is the slow healing of the Subscapularis tendon at the front of your shoulder (they have to cut the tendon totally to "get to" the shoulder innards), and the biceps tendon, that they must cut and screw to your humerus instead of going to your now-removed shoulder joint. When these two tendons have healed (9 months from now) you'll be AMAZED at how good your shoulder works and feels. I mean......it's unimaginable for you right now. I suffered for 15 years with a loose, arthritic shoulder. I still can't believe how strong and useful it now is three years later.

Two things you can't do once you're recovered: take up boxing or running a jackhammer. Artificial shoulders don't like impact loading. Otherwise, you'll be thrilled with the looonnnnng term results. I promise.

Been through the shoulder surgery rotator cuff & bicep tear myself , Its been 6 months i have good range of motion but no strength can barley lift 3-4 pounds with it. I did the PT religiously everyday. I have a appointment next Tuesday for a new MRI to see what the problem is hoping it is just weak muscle and more PT will fix. I had both knees done first one was the right one back to work in 12 weeks. Had the other done last year back to work in 10 weeks. My suggestion is hit the PT hard everyday and listen to doctors . Good luck with your surgery.

One thing that helped me was to make a pulley, mounted to a door, and use it to stretch the muscle. I was doing it four times a day, keep at it.

My surgeon's PT office had that torture device and they eventually assigned me a "home version" of it, along with many others that you (they) can duplicate at home (by their direction!). I also had the big rubber bands and an interesting ball of special clay that you squeeze and "worked" constantly (once the PT folks decide you're ready for it) to regain strength and tone to your arm. Frankly, it's an interesting process of bringing the complex shoulder joint back, despite the pain of it all.

Thanks for the words of encouragement and support to all. That’s part of the reason the forum is so great. I am very fortunate that the clinic I am going to is a world class organization recently winning 3 major awards at a worldwide event. From the get go they were extremely knowledgeable and wanted to fix the problem. It’s set up as day surgery and I will be out this afternoon which is my preference. To go to the hospital for this adds at least 3 months waiting time.

Glad that the surgery went well. Sempre Adelante!

I had a machine that was delivered a week after my surgery that was used twice a day to help with range of motion .I used that for the first month then moved to PT . It really helped getting started on the PT i would have a tela-conference call once a week with the PT office who would show me how to use the machine and how to make adjustments to it to increase the resistance i strongly recommend you ask your doctor about prescribing the machine as it gets you starting the rehab faster. As mentioned earlier in this post i still use the pulley on the door daily to help with stretching.

OH my. One of my all time favorite C body convertibles in my all time favorite color. It would be tough just sitting and looking at it. It needs to be on the road wearing the tires out so you can get some whitewalls on her.

Oh.... I'm glad your surgery went well to.:)

Just thought it was time to give everyone an update. My surgery went extremely well and I am well on my way to recovery. Staples will be removed next week but need to stay in a sling for three more weeks. Went in at 7:30am and they booted me out at 1:30pm. I haven’t had a bit of pain from the surgery since day 1 and have even quit taking the damn pills. Even my PT doesn’t hurt however I am sure it will once they go full bore. Amazingly I didn’t even bruise as I was waiting for that. My biggest problem is being uncomfortable and glued to the sling with regular treatments from the ice machine. To say I am pleasantly surprised would be a huge understatement.
Thanks again to everyone for their support.
Now it’s time to be nice to my wife for all the wonderful support she has provided me. talk to everyone soon.

I remember when I had my hip replaced 15 years ago. Same thing, it was like someone turned off the pain switch. Glad you are feeling better.

That's great news! It makes me wonder if they didn't use a jackhammer and backhoe when they did mine? I'm sure the physical terror will get you. Good Luck
