the Big Boy 4-8-8-4, a B-17 that I would not have wanted to be a pilot, co, or nose gunner on, and the USAF E-3 AWACS (the most beautiful airplane in the world!)

There's a story about that B-17 in Edward Jablonski's book Flying Fortress. It took a direct FLAK hit just below the nose, instantly killing the Bombardier and Navigator. The pilot ordered "Abandon plane" but stayed in his seat, holding the plane still so the other men could get out. Six chutes were seen before the nose broke away, carrying the pilot with it. The plane hovered like that in the pictured for a few short seconds before dropping from the sky.

A testament to a man sacrificing himself for his friends, as well as the excellent flying capabilities of the B-17!
