They had a lock position, otherwise you didn't need the key.

I'm sure he's referring to the switch that allowed you to remove the key to allow anyone to use the car without a key in hand. This one...



Turn it one more notch to the left, the key came out but the cylinder couldn't be turned without it.

 

I've never seen that, even for a Chevy till now. I guess lock turned in 'acc".
