what made up your mind to move Dave?

I sold my house in Bridgeport Connecticut after I had a double killing in front of my house from a drive by shooting I ended up with a bullets through my living room wall as well.

I used to go work at the GE plant in Bridgeport for a week four times a year. That was twenty years ago... They actually had an armed robbery at the credit union on payday. Someone walked into the General Electric plant, walked upstairs to the onsite bank and robbed the place....

You, after the move, at the local show and shine. We'll have to change your name to Polaris Dave, though. That's a '71, BTW.

I used to live two blocks from those ge buildings, they have been torn down now after ge left the area.

Irma kicked the crap out of me yet I'm more resolved to stay in my little Paradise more than ever. :wtf::realcrazy:
This is where I want to be. I can't think of anyplace else.
Major hospital in my own neighborhood, banjo playing 20 minutes away.

Stan I think you said your place is built to the highest standards. I'm assuming that the last storm didn't do any major damage to your place. I completely understand and share your desire to get away from winter. While heat doesn't bother me my wife can't even handle the summer humidity here in southern Ontario so there is no way she could handle Florida. Arizona might be more our speed but then there is the issue of being away from our girls.

When I was there, GE was only using the first floor for manufacturing. There were some offices on the second and a toolroom on the fifth floor. At least 50% of the place was empty.... and it was a mess inside. You could see the handwriting on the wall that it wasn't going to be there much longer.

Last time I drove through there, the building was still standing.

Yes, those buildings were under used for years. When they sat completely empty until demolition, they were set fire to by squatters. All the old Remington arms buildings are coming down in Bridgeport too now as there were actually falling down and people were getting hurt by falling bricks walking by. I remember I had all the trim stripped of my 62 t bird as well as the battery and rims in my own driveway. The police finally showed up two days later to take a report.

my house is under 1200 square ft and my taxes are at 7 grand .
Taxes are just a killer. A coworker lives in town and pays about $5k on a 2200 sq ft house on a postage stamp. I'm out in the country with 19.5 acres about 1900 sq ft and pay about $1800 in taxes.
I included a pic of both areas to compare.
In my book there is no comparison. Lack of cell service is okay by me.

If something is going to drive me out of western PA it will be a lack of work. I live in a very economically depressed area. I'm blessed to have a job that provides well for my family even though we're not getting rich.

Dave, I'm with you on loving the west. Prior to everyone having a digital camera I had taken probably 20 some rolls of film on various trips to CO, NM, and AZ. I have a sister that used to live in Montana, but never got to visit her when she lived there. I'll get to see it sometime when I travel to see my brother outside of Seattle. I hope you get it all worked out so that you can make the move. Planning ahead is essential.

Love the pics Dave. Took me back to when I was in the Forest Service living in Cook City/Silver Gate Montana. Our district was the Gallatin Wilderness area. We are seriously thinking about retiring in a couple of years and are thinking either Red Lodge Montana, Gallatin Gateway area Montana or Jacksonville Florida. We also are tired of the crazy traffic in the Detroit area. A must will be some property with a nice 40x40 out building for both the 71 and the 73 and possibly a 72. Hope your plans come true and good luck.

Plan me in on a plot in your neighborhood in about the same time, Dave. :D
I think there's not much more to step up to from my already very nice village life to an area with such a low density of Population you can only find in such a wide countryside.
Been a Small town/Country Boy all my life.
Never realized up to now how awful the property tax can get in your Country. I live on for our conditions upper medium sized 8600 sq.ft. plot and tax is around 300 bucks I guess anually.

Oh and the out building...? Im serious when I talk about selling out . One or all three could go so the need for an out building could possibly be only for two horses .

I know there is a special attraction to hay burners for some folks but the time and effort required to maintain a fleet of C-Bodies will pale in comparison to those four legged money pits. They can literally eat you out of house and home.

I'd keep the cars and rent the horses lol.

I just got back from Saskatchewan yesterday and I can tell you the further west I go, the more I decompress. Breathing even seems to take less effort.

The only other place that does that for me is standing on an ocean beach with the waves breaking. Whatever it was you wanted to kill when you got there instantly becomes a far distant memory.

I don't think that if you are retired and collecting Social Security you shouldn't have to pay any kind of taxes anymore!

Pretty interesting read. I am glad you wrote this thread. As I was looking through the board the last few days and was reading your posts I thought maybe you had a problem with your health.

I can understand exactly what you are thinking. I grew up in Toronto and really I very seldom go there even though it is only an hour away. Mostly due to the traffic and the drivers. If I do go I try and plan it the best that I can.

Presently I live in a town of about 90,000 and I am two minutes from the country. I would say very shortly we also will be moving but not out of the area. Just a place with a nice shop, some property and a smaller house.

I am going to be 50 next year and you have to figure if not now......when?

Best of luck Dave!

Dave

I agree completely Dave. I am really at the end of my rope with PA. The burden they are placing on the residents all while the only thing they can agree on is that they will never agree with each other is getting old. To the lawmakers who might just happen by. Get your **** together and come to some agreements about making your state any state, better and livable. We the citizens cannot bear this load any longer, my dad just passed away Thursday and his house will be for sale and mine is not going to be done long before the sign goes in the yard. Again get your **** together or you will be standing in the capital of your state full of no one to bleed dry anymore.

I was always asked by a friend that comes back to Minnesota a couple/few times a year, "why don't you move?" Well, "who would pick you up at the airport?" I don't know why I never moved from this state, taxes are high, like 5th overall in the US. But I've moved away from larger populations over the years. First from the Twin Cities Western suburbs (old money) out west to farm country, and then 2 hours south near the border of Iowa, real farm country hardly any trees, they steal crop land! We have a town 10-15 minutes north or west, 35 miles east in and well, Iowa to the south. Like I've said before, rush hour is having to wait for 5-6 cars to go through the roundabout. People don't like big words, they live the simple life, work eat sleep, repeat.

I guess I like having 4 seasons, or I'm too dumb to realize I can leave, I think a little of both.

Yeah, anytime I had west to Montana or Oregon, I feel more relaxed minutes after I set out. It's almost a feeling of disappointment when I get back into Minnesota. I like having those states as a getaway destination, I know it will be all good, no matter how little I do when there.
