Hemmings Muscle Machines, quality rag BTW, has a article on a 512" based 440. It boast 585 hp @5400, and 640 ftlbs at 4100 rpm. Looks very sort of stock on the outside and used a hydraulic cam, normal oil pan. They brought the budget in at less than $6000, nice. Some prices are in line some are not but nothing crazy wrong.
There is a couple omissions and some parts I would put on the table at Carlisle swap meet. Namely the distributor (no vacuum advance), and the fuel pump is IMHO not enough to feed almost 600 hp in a actual car. I would spend a few extra dollars on a quality dampener.
Omissions include port work $$$$ and jetting changes (no way a stock Eddy 750 is right OOTB on a 500+ inch engine)
Good article and shows what low flow small port heads, and how big a hydraulic cam can be hidden by big cubic inches.
You cheapskates will have to go pick up a copy for all the details.
