I would at least have the fluid checked for freezing point. Not enough antfreeze and one cold night= cracked block. As the say on GOT, winter is coming...

As a first step, I ordered a new cap and a temp gun. Can you guys tell me some "standard" temps for comparison ?

There’s a simple tool for testing to what temp your antifreeze will work that should be available in any parts store.
My thinking on all your noisy boiling is you have hard sediment built up in your block. I’ve run across something similar in household hot water heaters many times. When they’re new/clean they’re basically whisper quiet but when the hard water sediment starts piling up on the bottom they get really noisy. Just my .02

Prestone, Zerex, anything as long as it's green and NOT the 50/50 diluted crap either, but straight 100% antifreeze and you'll be good. Maybe throw in a bottle of rust inhibitor as well. Good Luck

Just to update you guys on that. As mentioned - I started to replace the rad cap as first thing and also bled the coolant. Look likes this helped a lot. A did a few test drives - no after boiling now. I also did some measuring with the thermal gun - it is about 180° F at the radiator and a bit higher in the motor block.
