2019 hurricane season thread...

First weather system to affect me this year will be/has been Dorian. Stupid thing, I was blissfully ignoring it when they updated it to central FL a few days ago :BangHead:. Now there's so much chatter and BS I can't accomplish much/anything at work, I think I may take the day off today a putz around the house instead.

BTW, I am not too concerned, Orlando's worst case is wind and rain... maybe some power lines down and red lights out... but I am thinking this is a slow moving storm and I might just relocate to someplace with better chances of electronic amusement (potential power loss/storm duration could be 2 days, or more). If I go, it will be a last minute decision and have lots to do with hotel bookings in my chosen direction of evacuation (opposite the herd).

Those on the coast should be more concerned than I am. @bulldogchesty I am thinking of you. Saw this morning that @commando1 has a chance of foul weather. Heck, the stupid thing could still skip across the state and visit @bluefury361 ... who will hook up Connie and go on vacation as soon as he feels uncomfortable with the track. I think @monaco75 has a good chance to continue playing with the little trains, even if he should be playing with the big cars :poke:. @73 T&C is in a place that must be losing it's collective crap over this one... just because of history

FWIW to those outside of the state, folks started going nuts a couple days ago. Not a good time to get groceries or gas... which reminds me, I'm going to wander down the street and get some cigarettes before the gas station starts a cover charge just to enter the lot... Have fun everybody.

Batten down the hatches! And for your own sake Jeff, quit smoking already!!!

Don't worry, someone on the Weather Channel this morning mentioned that it may scrape the coast like Matthew did... but just checked and the blocking High's are starting to move.

The idiots in the Nazi/Daytona Beach Shores already made the city a voluntary evacuation zone. scheeech. (I wonder if they have the roadblocks setup already?)

Remember, What does a Hurricane in Florida, a Divorce in Arkansas & a Tornado in Alabama have in common?

Someones fix'in to lose a trailer!

The Spaghetti Report to follow soon.

(edit) had to correct mandatory to voluntary

Jeff, I hope all will be well. Keep in mind the weather service was the first to come up with “fake news” and over emphasize the force of these storms to increase attentiveness. As a side note, I will be busy at work this weekend, my company is providing data for a hurricane evacuation study in the Florida impact area. Keep the cell phone handy, you might get a call, LOL.

:D

Jeff, as always you are more then welcome to come hang up here to try and get away. I can’t promise indoor storage for the car/s but there is an open yard for them to stay. Hopefully the trains will keep running!

Hell, I’ll have somebody to help get me out to the garage lol.

Fingers crossed everyone makes it out unscathed. You aren’t kidding! People have been going nuts the last couple days.

Being as I'm a short walk to the ocean, hurricanes are worrisome to say the least. I have whole house genny power (16kW), but it doesn't work very well when it's under several feet of water.

OTOH, never has a storm come ashore here in Ponte Vedra Beach. Closest was Dayto a long time ago (Dora). Typically it comes in elsewhere and becomes a windy rain event here, or it goes up the coastline and wallops NC, which gives us a severe rain and wind event (like Matthew, which was scary). Regardless, for those who have never been in the potential crosshairs, a 'cane is an unknown, worrisome thing until it's fully gone. But I guess it's better than worrying about a devastating, zero-predictable instant earthquake. No spaghetti to follow there!

I'm relieved that it looks like it won't be coming ashore over my house, but anyplace isn't a good place.

As for gas lines, I went out last night around 9:30 and filled my cars at empty gas stations. I don't get the gas line thing, but I guess it's "herd".

Seriously, this could rip right through The FUHOA Reservation. :wideyed:

Closest was Dayto a long time ago (Dora).

Hurricane Donna tore up Daytona Beach real good back in the 60's as by 2nd Gen's old timers I have talked to over the years. Is that what you are referring too?

And Donna came right over your area too (made landfall) but I guess you weren't around there then eh?

(edit) Hurricane Dora made landfall in Jacksonville in 1964.

What about Hurricane Charley in 2004? Were you there then?

(edit) Oppps your in Ponte Vedra that's why you remember Dora, I thought you were the member in Punta Gorda.

Yesterday i was certain I was going to be putting the storm shutters up. Today I'm going with F'it.

Stay safe fella's!

According to my local weather forecasters .......

We have a massive high pressure front locked in the Mid-Atlantic area so the hurricane has little chance rolling up the coast. All we have to worry about is deadly rip currents and beach erosion.

WHAT? West Coast pussy, :poke: here in Daytona Matthew was (as I was standing outside) "eh just a storm".

Geeeeeez Louise...

Not sure what you mean about west coast. Ponte Vedra Beach is on the east coast, exactly 86 miles north of Daytona. Matthew was 20-25 miles out at sea here, heading north, flooded Jax Beach and really ripped St Augustine. We had mandatory evac because PVB is a barrier island. I stayed at a house I own across the Intracoastal without a genny, in the dark with no AC. The 8-10 hours of nonstop moaning wind noise was a wee bit worrisome.

It was "Dora" in 1964 that did Jacksonville damage. Weird path! Hurricane Dora - Wikipedia

Donna (1960) came ashore in the Keys and traveled up the mainland, exiting as a weak storm into the ocean at Daytona, then bashing NC when it recovered its power over the Gulf Stream. Hurricane Donna - Wikipedia

adult "free speech" gold member area
So you need to be a gold member to exercise free speech? Sorry couldn't resist. No need to answer since I don't want to hijack this thread. Back on topic we are constantly being fed a line by the MSM that the severity of weather in particular hurricanes is increasing due to anthropogenic warming of the climate. I like Tony Heller's sceptical approach to the topic which allows us to stand back and do a reality check. As you can probably tell I don't count myself among the climate Chicken Littles.
