what side of my 383 is the vin code?

Passenger side toward the front along the bottom lip near oil pan, if a 69 or newer engine. If a 68', if you have one, it is on the driver side about 1:00 as you look at the engine from the front of the car. , behind the kickdown linkage on the leading edge of the back of the engine.

On my '66 it is the front right side, in front of the valve cover. Here is a photo and a decipher for the numbers http://www.moparts.org/Tech/Archive/motor/36.html

According to mine the first line makes since. The last it was made on December 82nd. The 28th doesn't make since either because my Certicard says it was sold on December 25th????

Thanks Zymurgy, that is the build date. he wanted the VIN#,,., if there is one at all.
I like your camera picture, I think I need a 21st century Camera. LoL

But if we're talking '68 it'll be up on the back near the oil pressure sending unit.

I have been all over my '66 and never saw a VIN number. That's why I posted the build date. What years did they have VIN #s or when did they start?

The federal Gov't Mandated 1 Jan 1968 to have Vin#'s on engines and transmissions, as theft problems were epidemic. Chrysler started in the fall, but only conformed as of 1 jan 68. So the vin's were by the oil sending units thru the spring and summer of 68 production. by 1 aug 68 the 69's were on a polished boss, passenger side as described. Back then Muscle cars were stolen rampantly, so the numbers concept was supposed to fix that. no such luck. in the early 70's whenever I responded to a used engine for sale ad, I had to call the cops to be sure it came from a wrecked car. half the time the engine was a stolen.

Built December 8th on 2nd shift.

That thought crossed my mind, I mentioned it to my wife, and she said are you still talking about cars??? LOL Thanks for allowing me to indirectly hijack this thread. Now I know my build date.

Now I know my build date.

Actually Mike, that is the date the engine block was machined. The cast date can be found on the left side of the block below the deck. Both should predate the cars build date which is on you fender tag and/or broadcast sheet by anywheres from a few days to 60 days previous.
The "D/N" cast into th right side ndicates what shift the block was cast on, and the "clock" will indicate what time it was cast.

OOPS, guys its a 67, guess you needed that info. And just trying to confirm NUMBERS MATCHING so I can know where to look. Thanks again.

Keep in mind that the "Build Date" is actualy the Scheduled Build Date.
If for whatever reason cars may have been moved up of back, ding in the paint, vendor problems, who knows.

My 67 Barracuda has a November 29, 1966 Scheduled Build Date and it was in California (from MI) a week later, not in 1966!
The 67 Barracuda was a late entry car and they probably bumped up the production to help get them out quicker.

If it's a model year 67, it won't have a VIN.

VINs weren't stamped on the blocks and transmissions until model year 1968.

how about a 67??

The best you can do on a pre-68 car is to find the block cast date and the other codes on it which will tell you when the engine was built with respect to the car.......so if the engine comes up as built say 2-6 weeks before the car then it is as close as you can get to #'s matching. There is no official #'s matching on a '67 but if the dates/codes match then it's considered to be very likely the orig motor.
