Later year diff 3rd member in earlier car?

I pulled the old diff out. The centers sure look the same. Both spider gear carriers have a 3" opening. They have the same main casting number on the pumpkin. The clean/dry one is the new 3.55 geared one going in.

I have been reading this and I keep hearing people mention axles and blocks and of course shims and the block. I thought the person wanted to know if a complete rear end assembly could be swapped in?

Not true for up to 64. Chrysler never started using the beveled clutches to preload the unit till 65 or 66. They just used the ramps on the pins. Kim
Yes and there is a measurement for the pins to case and if they are over .020 The clutches are worn. 1960 Chrysler FSM page 23-24 of rear axle.
