Hey all, I'm building a 496 for my 66 Monaco right now and am going to need to beef up the stock 727 that rests in the tunnel. It's going to need to withstand around 600 torque and 600 hp I assume.

Do you guys have any rebuild/beef up kits you'd like to reccomend? Should I do a shift kit as well? I've seen Monster is on the site, but wouldnt mind paying less...

You will want to use a '71 or later transmission the the heavier front shaft and pump assembly. You will need to figure out what kind of stall speed this engine needs to get torque properly applied when you mash the throttle and purchase the appropriate convertor. With this setup you are going to need race ready bands and clutch packs and the valve body and governor will need to be setup to match the stall speed of the convertor and the range of the desired shift points. You should also install a deep sump pan and an after market transmission cooler. I would suggest having someone who specializes in hi torque transmission builds build this transmission for you. At 600 horses and 600 lbs of torque you are going to be pushing the limits of the transmission, so the build has to be right or something is going to break. Many a shiny new engine has wound up all over the track because something else in the drive train was not up to the task and let go at full throttle.

Thanks Dave. I hear people typically have custom TCs built for these C bodys due to their weight

That will be something that you need to go over with the transmission builder. A lot will depend on what gears you decide to run and if you plan to race this car or dust drive it as a sleeper. Getting actual horse power and torque numbers off a dyno run will be where you should start.

With the Monaco I'm basically demanding as much as I can. 496 daily driver that I'd like to drag on Fridays. I've got a lot to consider here, and with this much power I may end up sending it to 727specialist or someone of the like

Ask @MEV what he did. Daily driver stroker and drives to the track and races often.

I shall inquire. Hows your 505 coming along?

Transgo TF2 shift kit, A1 2500-2800 stall converter, 3rd gear kickdown, other than that it is a stock rebuild. No auxiliary trans cooler.

It shifts nice, does not bang, and the converter is un-noticible in daily driving. I have never had an issue. I am experimenting with the govenor right now to move my shift points up to 6000 RPM from 5600.

Disregard my PM. What year is your trans? Dave was saying certain years will be stronger than others. Your setup sounds real successful for a nearly stock setup.

I have run the original 66 trans, and i have ran an unknown year trans that had the 3rd gear kickdown, i am assuming it was a late 70's trans. The original 66 i ran with the stock converter, it was fine.

I know very little to add to this knowledge wise but I too am having a 440 stroker being built a 505 with aluminum heads bla bla,,and my plan for the trans is to get a good converter of the correct stall by giving the weight ,approximate power and rear ratio and see what happens. The trans has a shift kit and performs fine and is healthy. If I do have problems I have another 727 in the wings so there won't be too much down time. I won't be drag racing it nearly as often as MEV so at least on paper it could be fine.

:D I'm a few steps behind you guys, watching, learning. I think we may need a stroker thread.

That would be nice to have an all inclusive thread for stroker cars that anyone could input knowledge/experience into

Slow but sure. I have had a few roller coaster rides in getting all the loose ends settled. I am glad it is a Fall/winter/spring build so there is no rushing like those maddening TV shows and HAVE to get it done in 3 hours.. I still have my 440 in the car and bought another engine for the build so any delays I can still drive my Fury around no problem. It actually runs very well. Thanks for asking.
    You???

Expecting a call tomorrow from my shop to see whether they want to sleeve the block or leave it as is, then i will be ordering a boatload of parts. Cyl 7 and 8 were looking nasty at 40 over though, im expecting they'll want to sleeve it.

I was just about to order the kit for a 62-70 transmission, because MEV didnt seem to have issues with it, when I decided to just take a look at the numbers on it. Turns out the Monaco had a 72 swapped into it at some point. Looks like I'll have the tougher 727 from the get-go. Sweet!

71 up have bigger pump support, wider bushing for converter. It's not the end of the world with a still automatic trans. Very high rpm and shifts that shudder the car, trans brakes, well you can see where that leads.
