For what reason would the tail shaft of a 727 explode at a cruising speed?
That spins up the front (I think) drum and takes the whole case out. The tailshaft stays in one piece.Sprag or overrun bearing failed.
That doesn't sound good.

I would replace the U-joints and have the driveshaft spin balanced too.
No warning? Just exploded? Usually a very bad violent vibration for a few seconds and a lot of noise.
