68 Polara restore back on

I have pretty much done everything thing else myself on this car except for body work. I have a hard time giving my money to someone else when if I take my time and do a little research I am fully capable of doing it. I like to learn new things and understand how things are constructed and work. I have built an addition on my previous house. Built two garages , mine all by myself hiring only the concrete pad and garage door installation, and helped my neighbor working with his father in law who is a custom home builder. The second time with the homebuilder I learned a lot more. I have built bedroom furniture, built in cabinets, bars and many other projects.
Back to the task at hand in upholstery. I have covered stools, chair, but my largest endeavor was restoring a 1900’s button tufted fainting couch. I put it all back to original which required re-tying the springs. Making a pattern from the old button layout and hand tying over 100 buttons. So I consider re- doing my car seats back to original my next course in learning. I also have an upholstery sewing machine that I bought about 8 years ago for this project. My only use up to this point has been a couple of awning repairs, tailgating tent repairs, and installing windows in the tailgating tent sides.
I will post a few starter pictures here, but should actually start an Upholstery Restoration thread to chronicle the steps and things I learn going through this process.
I will also make a master set of patterns on canvas (8oz painter drop cloth) that should cover the 68 Dodge bench seats with the split back L4 & M6 interior codes.

Here is the truncated version of my upholstery thread.
Ordered material from SMS 8 yds of each vinyl on March 17. We will see how long it takes.
Patterns complete at least until I re foam and do a final layout.

Need to strip and paint the springs.

And then in the meantime figure out how to make 2” foam work since nobody offers 1-1/2” like the original.
And do I use cotton batting again or find some modern materials. Open for suggestions.
35.5 hours into it so far.

I looked the other day and couldn’t find them for the bench seat split back. Also The back seats cushions they had were for the Monaco or VIP with the drop down in the middle of the back. Then again their website seems hard to search.

I did some more searching on my computer for Legendary. I found that they have Dodge C bodies listed, but no models or years to choose from.

They did have Chrysler C bodies listed with data underneath. I will digress now with my view of how that happened.
“ hey new web guy we need you to link this list of model numbers to be our products”. He started with the C’s (as in Chrysler) and was working through the D’s for Dodge. He just got the Dodge C-body title on the web when the manager came over to review. “Where are you at on the list?” “I am starting on the Dodge C- bodies now” said the new guy. Manager says “quit wasting your time on C- bodies, nobody spends money on a C- body, you need to move on”.

That’s my story.......

Any way I did find the upholstery foam kits for rear and front bench for the Chrysler . $422 for the set. So far I got everything but the foam locally for about $110. I may go to Legendary to get the 1-1/2” foam as locally and most searches come up with 2” foam. The Legendary foam is $81 eachfor the 24x70”. So all together I should have about $272 into my cushion materials Vs $422. I will add up my totals and materials list when I am done.

A couple more paint pictures. They will resume color sanding next week.

I am going out there either tomorrow or early next week. Maybe I can get better pictures. The car is so big there really isn’t enough room inside to take pictures.
I need to get my seat springs and drive shaft. I took them out there to get blasted and epoxied. I had to bring the upper quarter trim Tuesday so he could accurately trim the headliner. (Better safe than sorry).
If I waited another week maybe my dash and steering column would be painted. I would like to bring those home so I can sub assemble them. They are prepped and primered.

I got a couple more pictures of the polish before they put the plastic and hood on prior to the vinyl top.

Car will be in my garage sometime next week. I picked up my seat springs and driveshaft and they said they are done with it. Top is on and the car is is waxed up. It was also “gift wrapped” in plastic taped down so it wouldn’t get dusty, so no pictures until I pick it up or get it home. I will have to borrow an enclosed trailer as it only has the rear window re-installed.
The guy I am borrowing the trailer from is the same guy that used to be my neighbor that helped me strip it down the 4th of July in 2007. What a milestone.

Picking it up and unloading. I was able to back the trailer up right to my back garage.

My braking system. I had a lot of help from gravity so used my straps as emergency brakes in case it got out of control.

It is now in my garage. Now not sure what to start on first. Wiring? Seals and rubber bumpers, body plugs, windows, radiator and splash shields ...? Too many choices.

My god, man. Absolutely stunning. Similar color scheme to the first Monaco I ever fell in love with.
So excited to see this put back together.
Congratulations. She's a killer already.
